Brought them home, gave them a bath very carefully (they were filthy inside) and here they are next to the bed. I feel like Augustus the Strong with his soldier vases. They weigh 27 lbs each, in case you were wondering.
I hadn't noticed this detail when they were in the shop. Are they bundles of wheat, I wonder?

I'm thinking that they commemorate the Root-Takahira Agreement of 1908.
From what I've read the Japanese were not very happy with the peace terms ending the Japanese-Russian war, peace terms negotiated by the U.S. Root-Takahira, a few years later, was meant to boost trade and cooperation but was signed in the context of growing mistrust of Japan in the U.S. and frustration by Japan of the treatment of Japanese immigrants in California.
It's an interesting topic I'd like to read more about.
In his video appraisal, Peter recommended the book: The China Mirage about Sino-U.S. relations and the effort by Teddy Roosevelt to bolster Japan as a balance to China.
@steve Sounds interesting, I'll place it on my reading list and see if it is on Kindle. I'm going to a bookstore tomorrow with a list, but they are unlikely to have the titles, so that leaves Amazon, Abebooks and Thriftbooks. I bought an English paperback copy of The Bolton Forger from Thriftbooks and it was an ex-library book from a Califormia Library with a stamp inside the cover, no longer the property of that library, it was in good shape snd looked unread. One of our members recommeded the book (I think it was William), an excellent read. I donated it along with some old Steinbecks with jackets that are old bookclub editions not worth the paper they are printed on to collectors, but I had Mylar acid free cover on Bus Stop, told the librarian someone will buy it for the old jacket as the art work on the bookclub jacket is the same as on the first, same goes for Sweet Thursday and To A God Unknown. I'm keeping my good condition hardback of Shantaram that was also recommended, that was a fine read too. Just bought The China Mirage for 3.99 on Kindle.
P.S. The chain bookstore had a bunch of bookclub editions in their rare section with high prices on them, which made me laugh because they are not worth anything as far as collectibility. I did find mixed in the fiction shelves a true first American edition of Then and Now by W. Somerset Maugham in a good jacket (it is not as valuable as the first U.K. due to following the flag, even if it came out first in U.S.) but certainly as much as the bogus prices the young English Majors had placed on the bookclub editions. I had the book years ago and used it for trade fodder, plus it was in truth, not a very good book, a small historical novel. I passed, but almost bought it because it had a sticker showing it was purchased at F.W. Woolworth. In my old book journal I kept the old book stickers like old Doyles, Brentano's and others, the gummed stickers were falling off from the flyleaves and I was passing the books on as trade, F.W. Woolworth just does not have the same cachet.😂 Found a signed Jo Nesbo but the illegible scrawl was not worth it to me and I had already read the book, found a couple on my Want to Read list and enjoyed the search, paying hardback price on the new one, not so much.
