(Please forgive the awful photos and lack of an image of the foot rim.)
At the store today were two large (24") Japanese vases with script and a pair of flags: U.S. & Japanese. Although they looked 19th c. to me, I couldn't be sure if they were from the postwar period or 1980s. The decoration is by hand.
They were so large and heavy and sitting on a concrete floor so I was afraid to try to take a photo of the foot rim; upon inspection they did have a little oxide orange to the outer rim and were slightly off white and rounded with glaze in the center.
What do you think? 20th c.? And what does the script say?

Okay with the 22 stars would put it around the civil war period of about 1865.
The design is similar to that of Koransha or fukagawa kiln.
It's nicely decorated with what looks like genuine gilt rather than paint.
My feeling based on the limited images is later Meiji period through to Taisho period. So 1900-1926

Steve, I think they are very beautiful and I agree they could well be Fukagawa or Koransha, certainly they look quality pieces. One was for sale on Craigslist - apparantly.
I used a translator and got Homi Trading Co Ltd, whether that is correct or not, I don't know but the flags might suggest some trans-pacific business partnership?
Just seen Sharon's comment: I am inclined to agree. You may be able to haggle a bit.
When I thought there was only one, i was really really going to buy it but then when I saw they were a pair I realized there was no way I had room in my small apartment nor did I want to try to re-sell because I don't want to deal with shipping these monsters. I think they're very nice and interesting, perhaps a bit of an historical relic, but sadly not for me.
Great price, though: currently on sale for 50% off: $220 each. If anyone lives in the Bay Area, head on down to Antiques Colony in Burbank/San Jose!
Translation commemorates a Japan-North American Trade Agreement. That would account for the two flags. The agreement referred to must be during or after the 1860’s Opening of Meiji Japan to the West. Although the vase doesn’t look quite that old, it could be a commemoration of many years later, say 25-50 years later which would make it late Meiji or early Taisho?
It’s a beautiful vase worth pursuing.

Update: went back to the antique store and... the vases are still there. I was sneaky and was able to get photos of one of the rims. Does it still look 19th c.?

Are they still half off? I would dated them from your photos as circa 1900 without seeing them in person. And I mighthave made the 20 odd mile trip to take a look in person but my medical condition doesn’t allow me to drive.

@sharonp The husband will not like this, but I am seriously considering calling the shop when they open to see if they are still unsold & making room somewhere. Maybe I could display one and store the other behind the couch. Trouble is, I don't want my place to look like an antique stall.
@gfhandel I put an i.d. request in with Peter to see if he thinks they're interesting. I am starting to lean towards buying them if they're still available. Tough decision!
