Hey folks,

I was at a dinner at a family friend's house and for the first time ever I happened to notice these vases in the corner of the room.  They seem to be of fairly good quality, but I wasn't sure if they are Satsuma or not, or if they had some age.

Sorry for the lighting issues, it was late when we finished dinner and the lights are yellowish.

Does anyone recognize the marks or the signatures?

Jeremy

Interesting faces and colours. I like the way the artist has placed a satsuma vase on a satsuma piece.

Have you tried looking for the marks on this website - you may have to join to really delve into it:

A pair of beautifully rendered Meiji/Taisho period vases.

I dont recognize the marks. If nobody here can decipher them perhaps try Martin Michels. Very nice guy. Very knowledgeable on said marks etc.

Please let us know the results.

@julia

I have been checking that sites databases out, thank you.  I had never seen these colors on satsuma vases, or the rendering style used on the buddhas face..  They intrigued me immediately.

@imperialfinegems

Mark,

I have never seen Satsuma decorated quite like these, in my limited experience with it.  I have reached out to Martin and will relay anything he tells me.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Yes I agree with you. Very unusual.

Looking forward to what Martin thinks.

@imperialfinegems

I am not sure what to make of this, perhaps they were exhibition pieces?  interesting nonetheless and I'll be sure to continue the research...

He couldn't find any info on the painter, but the translation is interesting.

"The mark on the bottom is not a name, but a number: 三百三  ?  七  ?   ( san hyaku san  ?  shichi  ? ) = 303  ?  7  ?.

I can't figure out the other 2 marks, but again, these are not names.
The longer mark on the side is a very interesting one :
Tokyo 東京 Kingama 錦窯 - Seiho 晴圃 Ga 画 (Tokyo muffle kiln - painted by Seiho).
The red seal on the bottom left is a Kakihan, a usually unreadable personal seal of the painter.
The Tokyo Kingama is established in 1872 / 1873 and is a porcelain factory affiliated with the secretariat
of the Vienna International Exposition (World Fair) of 1873 and at least in production till 1902.
A Kingama is a kiln used to burn overglaze paintings. When applying gold or silver, another process is
necessary after the firing. The glaze is applied after the gold and silver painting and the pieces are fired
at a low temperature of around 400 degrees Celsius."

How interesting.

So possibly a exhibition pieces.

It's intriguing. You could ask gotheborg website. They have a few self-proclaimed experts on japanese porcelain.

I would ask them etc. But my account has been suspended due to a recent post.

I have asked another friend of mine. So hopefully he can shed some light on them.

The mystery continues..... 😊

@imperialfinegems Mark I can’t see you getting suspended for anything? Sometimes things get strange on Gotheborg. I’m not sure if it’s a translation software issue.

I was suspended by one of the dragons. We had a heated argument over one of my posts.

In the heat of the moment I wrote to him that if you don't like my opinion then cancel my account. Which he then promptly suspended me.

I have not asked to be lifted from suspension as of yet. I am thinking about it.

Sounds like a grammatical error. I think you better to have the account re activated and simply ignore this grammer Dragon.

P.S Is my post in the discussion Spam? It has been set to private. I cannot edit it. So it is what it is.

I used the google translate app on the number on the bottom and it came up with "Case 303 No. 7".

Pretty interesting... although the app can sometimes have issues, it was able to show me the two unreadable characters.

@imperialfinegems

At one time I had thought about joining the Gotheborg forums but I have heard from a number of people about being kicked off for arguing with mods over their opinions.  Its one of the reasons I came here, not to argue but that the forum for the most part is able to work out their differences and learn from the differing opinions.

Anyways I hope you get that resolved, or if not I hope all works out for you.

Cheers,

Jeremy

@jbeer2121 I don’t call it arguing I like to look at it as debating I like a lot of others find most of our answers by challenging and debating the authenticity of an item. Without the debate everything would be authentic. But there is a cancel culture on that forum. I have seen experienced member knowing a item is authentic say it’s not because they simply just don’t believe an beginner hobbyist deserves such pieces. I if you challenge and put them on the spot boom your booted.

I have been a member on Gotheborg for many years, but I rarely post as I find it rather intimidating. I enjoy learning there but this forum suits me better.
