Hi All,

I found these two vases in Texas, over Christmas.  I know that they are 20th Century at best but am curious as to the age.  They have the line-and-bead decoration on the upper rim, that Peter says can be anywhere from 1930's to yesterday.  The enamel decoration looks decent to me, and the apocryphal Qianlong mark on the bottom is hand painted.  Based on the faces, I think they match up with q25 in Elkof's book, and are post-1960.  They are very light and thinly potted--maybe could be described as "eggshell"--not sure if that corresponds to a particular date.  Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Charles

Hi Charles,

In my opinion these are 60's.

The mark is hand-written not stamped. The cut corners double boxed was I believe seen from about the later 50's.

The quality is better than normally seen.

I could see them a bit earlier from the 1940s. I have a similar one and Michaela said on Gotheborg this was a time when they produced some really nice things.

Well, that would make a big difference in value, if it is 49 or before 1949, makes it Republic. I do not know how you could prove the age, but if you are keeping to enjoy, it really does not matter, I love that black fringe, always reminds me of Gorey illustrations.

Handwritten marks are generally rare from the Proc and are normally special orders and expensive to buy if genuine.

I had a pair like this it was looked at and said to be PROC it didn’t matter much because these are in great  demand anyways. When I sold the pair it flew off the shelf and sold high. These late republic into the PROC sell for more than the antique early republic porcelain’s but in this chase the China stamp in my opinion hurts the piece.

@lotusblack,

Your assessment is correct my friend. These are in high demand.

The one I posted is up for sale for $5000 AUD. As it's a special order from 1967.

Thanks, all!

Well, I don't think these are as nice as Mark's example!  I think they are a dead ringer for q25, which does start in the 1940's although it peaks in the 1960-1970 range.  Even though I like their decoration, it never occurred to me that they might have real value--they make up for the other pieces I bought, that I am beginning to think are modern fakes.

Brian, I am sure that I could take off the "CHINA" mark with acetone, but I won't!  That just doesn't seem right.  In any case, I will keep them for the time being, so it doesn't matter.

I was hoping the script might have a cyclical date, but I could not discern one...

Charles
