I'd like to know what you all think of this painting, it's age, origin, and quality of work. It looks to have been folded up at some point and became stained, so there are condition issues. At any rate, can anyone tell if this is something special or just ordinary?

Nice looking painting. Looks to have some age. Perhaps pre 1930's.
I was reading something the other day that causes the brown mark/line down the center/other. On old paper they used to use wooden panels at the back of the frame. Apparently without proper backing the paper would make lines/marks similar to yours over a period of time caused by the edges/other of the backing wooden panels.
Obviously yours to my eye has been reframed at some point etc to counteract any further damage.
Other than that I know absolutely nothing about the artist/other. Hopefully others maybe able to decipher the calligraphy/artist.

The painting is Japanese. There is a signature “written by: xxxx” The four character name indicates a Japanese artist as Chinese artists would be either two or three characters. If you wanted to find the artist take the first four characters and search for a match online if you have the time. The condition is poor with the folds and stain but it does appear to have some age.

The name is definitely Japanese and seemed familiar to me. I tried looking for a match on Wikipedia “list of Japanese artists” but had no luck. You can try but may take time. Only the first four characters are the name as the fifth and last character is “written by.” Good luck in your search.

@gfhandel George, I pulled up that list on wikipedia but all the names are written out in English letters, so how do I change them to be in Japanese - is there a way to do that once I'm on the page? John

I went through list and could not find any matches. Only thing I notice is of the first two characters the second part of the surname is “kawa” or “gawa” You might try to post the signature on one of the other forums where a Japanese speaker or art expert can take a look.
