Dear forum members, I was offered this plates but have no idea what it is, are they European? How old are they? Look very odd.

Don't look European to my eye. Have seen that design or one very similar painted on Chinese and Japanese items with dates from the Ming through to the late Qing . Expect people more expert than me will be able give you more information. Those marks on the back look etched possibly by a previous owner ?

Thank you for your opinion, now that you pointed out that the letters are etched it makes more sense, so that would eliminate the European origin, the blue circle on the inside of the foot rim points to Japanese pottery, maybe a Japanese copy of Chinese popular design?

After seeing some more photos it is clearly two different plates with the same mark at the back, clearly Michael is right and it is an owner's mark.

it is 19th century kitchen Qing. If you google for that expression the first picture that pops up looks exactly like your plates. These were made for everyday use so they sometimes show owners marks. The black one seems to be misfired. I quite like these rustic items.
The owners mark doesn’t look Chinese but these plates were exported throughout South East Asia, so maybe someone wrote with non Chinese marks.

The term for this kind of wares is Swatow. Kitchen Qing works just as well as a discription.
Scapdixon has one for sale in the buy it now section. The painting is much better though.
The shaping of the ‘R’ reminds me of old Potrugies script. Now would’t It be great if it can be traced back to Portuguese Batavia.

The plate was sold while I was trying to identify what it is ? . A pity. Would love to have one of these. At least I will now know one when I see it. Lesson learned.
To make me feel better a seller offers this dish at a discount, the mark is rather odd but the brushwork looks nice and the calligraphy is not bad.What do you think?
What a pity. But be patient, others will turn up sooner or later. As to the plate it has a Japanese look to it.

A pity indeed, the downside of being a novice I guess, sometimes I buy utter rubbish and sometimes I let interesting pieces slip through my fingers. The invaluable experience is the best thing I got today ? .

Hi Spartakos - as Birgit says, be patient, if something is meant to come to you it will!! As for the landscape/calligraphy dish offered this is Japanese, the mark reads 'Fuku'.
