Curious if any of you can help to assess this thangka. It seems to me that it could have some age, but I know next to nothing about these. It appears to be a Vajrasana Mandala design based on some other examples I have seen. The painting seems basic in certain ways compared to others I've looked at, but that might not be a bad thing when it comes to these, I'm just not sure. The fabric it is painted on is rather stiff, so I cannot imagine rolling it up at this point, although it seems that they are meant to be rolled up traditionally. The fabric border is clearly aged. This is another item coming up for auction locally in a couple of days. I already left an initial bid but I would like to go into the sale with more information. Thanks for any thoughts! John
I posted pictures of this in another forum that specializes in Tibetan sacred items and they say it is more recent and of lower quality, so I will probably not go after it, unless you all have a different perspective that sheds a more positive light.

I purchased this a few years ago. It has been folded, and has some pretty bad creases. Do you think of it has any age? Can you share the Tibetan sacred item site with me, so I can ask them?

It's a facebook group called Collecting Sacred Religious Art from Tibet, Central & East Asia & Indonesia.
The fella who runs it seems to keep it on a pretty tight leash. Your post doesn't go live unless he approves it, etc. And my sense is that it's a little exclusive, however I also get the sense that there are some knowledgeable folks in there, so you might find it to be a useful place for information and answers.
I don't know how old your Thangka is or of what quality. The one I posted is sewn into a fabric border and mounted to a rod, much like a hanging scroll, and it has a piece of fabric on the top that can be brought down to cover the picture when it is not being displayed. I think that is pretty standard to have those things for a Thangka, so that yours doesn't is interesting and might give some clues to it's age and quality. It is hard to imagine someone folding up one of these as they were more typically rolled. Also, they are consecrated items, so they would be treated with great respect. So, if yours was an older better quality item, then there must have been extreme circumstances that led to it being folded. I am conjuring up the image of Tibetan monks fleeing the Chinese in the mid 20th C, etc, and having to hide their sacred items as they escaped to India. Either that or it is more of a tourist object that was purchased and folded up to be brought back home. At any rate, I'd love to know what you find out about it, so please share an update when you get more info. John
I will also say that in researching Thangkas it was astonishing to see the range in prices, from low hundreds of dollars to one I saw for over a two million. So clearly there are many factors that would contribute to determining rarity and value, none of which have I yet learned. However, my initial sense is that the level of detail in the painting is of great importance, as well as age, which is much the same as with everything in this field. Perhaps someone here with more knowledge will chime in and teach us something. It would be nice to see if anyone else has examples to share that they have collected and learned about. John
