Hi All,
I just picked up this lovely little table screen tile. It's heavily damaged, but seems to have much age to it. I know nothing about it and would love any ideas and information you may have. I also provided a picture of the way the frame is pinned together for clues on age. If anyone can translate the calligraphy, that would be amazing. 6"X4"

Anything printed from underneath the table bottom above the floor?
Also is the interior of the tile crack bright white or any signs of yellowing?
It looks like part of a larger inset screen... circa 1900. Based upon the rendering, of fairly low quality... I don't read Chinese, so others might be able to help.
@pbarski93 I do not see any additional writing unless it wore, and the interior of the crack is pretty white.
@greeno107 Because of the notch in the frame I thought it may set in a stand similar to this:
Also, as I examine it closer, my gut is telling me that it is painted and not fired, so I'm wondering if it may be a painting on stone slab. Maybe the close up of the crack can give insight into the material.
I'm with @greeno107 on the era for the artwork, it has late qing dynamic styling with the medium with its line work and details. You also don't see conversions like this on conventional markets, someone at one point converted the screen into a table. They did a decent job at this part from the top views so far.
The cracks appear pretty recent if it's that white compared to the roughed in spots around the closeups.
Another detail to check, while the paint looks roughed in and worn, it's hard to make our the finer details about it. Is most of it smoothly intact or does it form with the blunt cracks and wear shown in the closeups?
Also was this bought through a market place or a dealer? Wondering if there was any history attached to it.
@happyholiday It's painted...likely marble. The comparison you've made is with a very finely painted 'dali' stone screen in zitan wood, among the most valuable woods in the world. The referenced screen is also inscribed in the back.... all of these factors point towards a complete table screen of exceptional quality.
However, your screen....well....not trying to be mean, here. It just doesn't have any of those traits, but it is likely of a similar time period.
A more complete screen might have some value...$300-500, but not as you have shown. Sorry.
@pbarski93 Thank you for your insights. Here's a few more closeups taken outside to show the wear. This was picked up at the very end of a random estate sale for $1. They had some chinese porcelain that went early in the sale, but a modest home, not notable collectors.
@greeno107 No apologies. I always appreciate the straight honesty. I am 100% in agreement with you regarding the quality of my piece. The example I shared is merely a means of understanding the object in front of me. My knowledge is very limited so I appreciate the insights of you and others on the forum. With my lack of knowledge I just want to rule out whether despite its crudeness, if this piece has any age of consideration that could make it more important or if its a turn of the century souvenir.
Painted definitely, yeah the estate sale history and greeno107's statement kinda add up to the whole picture a bit with the info and details.
An honest purchase but nothing note worthy unfortunately. That dollar paid is a dollar well spent however overall.

@pbarski93 Yes thank you both for your insights. A dollar well spent on learning something new and enjoying the experience. Much appreciated. For me the inscription side is much prettier. The aesthetics of how it's painted is more pleasing than the scene on front. Maybe someone will be able to solve the mystery of what it says 🙂
@happyholiday agreed, the calligraphy is pretty nice on this side and the age + crck works better on this side with that aged effect. It's more fitting and appealing to modern environments imo.
it is japanese, not Chinese.
