I saw this one today and was unsure about it. It seems to have a bunch of oxidation along with very interesting colors to the enamel that blend and fade into different shades and colors that makes for a really cool appearance. It kind of seems like it could be old, but in other ways it doesn't. For example, I don't see any pitting at all. But the wiring seems done very tastefully and the wire seems gilded. The color is surreal, but does that mean it's a modern fake? Compared to other examples I'm seeing online, if this one is authentic it seems perhaps to be of another class, almost like this would be one of the types that the others were based on. I'm leaning towards thinking it's older, maybe 19th C. But I'm curious to hear others thoughts. Thanks! John
That's a nice looking bull, looks like bronze on the underside, certainly appears to have some age.
Hi, that seems to be a modernist ( or surrealist like you said ) approach to han dynasty bronze bulls to me, with some well considered cloisonne accents instead of inlayed metal only.
( https://www.cottonartgallery.com/product/metal-buffaloes-sculptures/ - another (more contemporary) pair without cloisonne. )
I guess 1920ies to 1960ies. I like the work of that artist; whoever has done it. ( ....no Dali signature to find ?)
It reminds me of some of the more modern vases that have a swirl of darkish, muted colours that take no account of the wires. If this were old, I would expect to see a more traditional approach to the cloisons and colours. It is rather nice, though, although he does look a bit like someone has tried to age him.
I was just looking at the buffaloes Christian posted which reminded me to say that I would also expect to see better details such as the eyes and hooves.
Quality is fairly low. Buffalo is "empty" in terms of life. Head is way too small for such a body. Looks a random "one off" job done by someone to see how it will go 🙂
Quality maybe even too low to be a very new repro. Probably I would agree with Christian 1960s or so.
@lucky Perhaps it was more the desired style of the 60ies than a low quality; the wirering in different metals is executed nicely in my eyes and the ( galaxy-like colored ) enamels avoid that borders by purpose - they are 2 different elements of design standing on their own.
@dante agreed in regards to a wiring. Nicely done. When I said quality low, I had a full body on my mind, piece itself, not having a decoration on my mind 🙂
Thanks for all the input. So is this something worth buying? We have certainly seen 20rh century pieces doing well lately. Do you think it would get traction at an auction?
Would you buy it at auction?
I don't think I would. Maybe if it was really cheap. It may be mid 20th c, but it may be more recent. I wouldn't feel confident about the age without seeing it close up.
I would buy it if it doesn´t exceed a 200 Euro range and doesn´t claim to be antique.
@ Julia Yes, I bought one of those swirly enamel vases thinking it was Japanese, only to discover it was from India. However, I could not find a bull like this one listed as Indian, but the swirly enamel vases do appear to be sixties. My vase was in such a traditional Japanese oval shape with some lillies and spider lillies no less, but all the other similar pieces of swirl enamel vases were listed as Indian. Does not matter, I still like it. Look up the cyclical dates for Year of the Ox John 🤣 .
