This is a Japanese 8 sided blue and white bowl with 8 roundels front and back. It was my second purchase in 1970s Japan. The DeYoung Museum in San Fransisco has the Ming reticulated copy. Also there are a couple of poly-chrome 18th century similarities in the Schiffer Book p42-43. My small bowl size is 12.8 x 4cm. The drawing is amazing! It has a Lacquer gold repair. Extremely small bubbles in tight closeups. An awful lot of work on such a small bowl.

Hi David,
That is a gorgeous Japanese Bowl and I suspect 18th century, I think I have seen one just like it in Shibata. Give me a few and I will find it. Off hand I am thinking early 18th. And that Kintsugi repair is a wonderful addition.

Jeremy,
Thank you so much! Perfect find!! AND I have another question. As many who have lived in Japan there is always a search to find something old that has has some hidden Christian Symbol - because of the persecution of Christians in early years. I only recently noticed this mark on the foot of my bowl while doing some photography. It was hard to read and I think I only saw it in a certain tilted light. What do you think?
I didn't know that. How interesting. It does look very deliberate. Would that be done by owners? I can't really see if it is cut into the glaze or covered. Have you compared it with other examples.
@musicnus
David,
That is quite interesting, and something I never really thought about. I did some morning reading on the Hidden Christians" or " Kakure Kirishitan" of Japan. It seems they often hid Christian symbols in pieces, Guanyin's wearing crosses or holding a baby Christ, decorations including crosses and whatnot, just pretty much anywhere they might get away with it. I am not sure the meaning of your mark, though it does look very deliberate. I suppose this just adds another layer of complexity to your already very interesting and fine dish.
Cheers,
Jeremy
In James Clavell's book Shogan there were many scenes of Japanese Christians forced to stomp on a cross or be killed. This was all historical as well. Mostly in the southern Islands where the Portuguese Priests entered Japan. By 1600 there were a million converts. So the CROSS could be the main thing they wanted to be hidden. Those Christians would draw or scratch or paint a cross on the back of something in the home. They would then turn around the object and then say their rosary etc. These pieces are very rare. I have a thought about this piece. I'll make start another post for those who haven't followed this post.

David,
One of my favorite books. I knew they were persecuted but had no idea about the hidden crosses and marks. So cool, I do think the mark is on purpose, I just love the thought of a secret message... Now I have something else to look out for.
