Hi All,
I don't know what to make of this jar (10" tall). I have photographed it exactly as I found it. It is a bit dirty, and scuffed, and has a crack, but still really beautiful. The body has an oil-drop glaze, mostly blackish, but with bluish overtones and orange spots. The glaze has a fine orange-peel texture, with larger pits (bubbles) associated with some of the orange spots. The lid is a different glaze, blackish-brown without any spots, but golden orange where it is thin on the corners, and topped with a foo-lion. The lid doesn't seem to make sense with the jar, and I think it is a marriage. I am not sure what the jar is made of--appears to be a kind of low-fired porcelain, gritty and slightly porous (maybe high-fired earthenware?). The lid appears to be made of a kind of gritty tan low-fired porcelain(?). The glaze line ends neatly at the bottom of the piece, just above the foot, which is slightly concave and flared, and flat on bottom. The foot is spottily covered with a dense black iron oxide layer. The jar looks to have age to me. It is dirty in the photos, but the dirt came off with soap and water and a toothbrush. And it is scuffed in a very convincing way to have at least a little age.
The jar is ribbed outside and inside, and the inside is also glazed with the oil-drop glaze. The glaze is very complex and multicolored, and the closer you look, the more complex it is. I really love the foot and bottom of the jar.
In my fantasies, this is a Song oil-drop jar, but I am thinking it is more likely a studio piece--maybe it even came with that lid! I suspect you will tell me the shape is completely wrong, and this is a modern piece. I will keep it in either case, but if it is a modern piece, I will display it with the lid on...
Any thoughts?
P.S. Yes, I know it has the dreaded felt pads...
Charles
To me the lid looks like a Henan black jar lid, at least the glaze does. The jar also looks somewhat chinese in form to me, I don't know why exactly, I think partially the way the foot is cut and the taper to the mouth... You may run it by Peter, I am by no means an expert on either of these, but knowing that they are married, lid and jar, and the lid looking very similar to a known Chinese type, maybe your feeling is correct about the jar.
Also Felt pads in my experience are not usually an immediate determining factor of a piece being new, usually around me at least, people with nice furniture do put them on, heck I have put them on piece just so I don't scuff the glass cabinets in the shop.
Jeremy
Wow, Jeremy. You are dead right on the lid. I looked up Henan jars, and there it was, first link. Given that they are Song to Jin dynasty, maybe that does make it more likely that the bottom is Song as well. I will definitely ask Peter!
