Octagonal bowl I found some time ago. I like the painting of the interior, but the painting and large medallions on the inside rim don't seem to fit well with it in my eyes. The leaves sprouting from the foot don't seem to compliment the piece well either. I'm not familiar with the mark. Any ideas as to age? Thank you all!
Asher
Hi Asher -
The four-character mark may read 'Cheng Hua Nian Zhi' or 'Cheng Hua period made' ...
I say may as this mark is very poorly written. I'am sure George@gfhandel may be able to confirm or probably correct this translation ...
As to the piece itself I believe its Japanese but such wares, and there dating, is really not my area - so lets what to hear others opinions ...
Stuart
Thank you Stuart!
It is certainly one of the stranger Chenghua marks out there, if it is one... The "Zhi" character is a mess.
Japanese wares are not my field either so I guess time will tell.
Asher
Well I may have found something. On Gotheborg it refers to this mark as an "Imitation Chenghua" mark, made by the Arita kilns during the 19th century and possibly earlier. My guess was that this is a 19th century piece and I think this supports that attribution. The mark pictured on the website has its differences but that comes down in part to the individual calligrapher when looking at these... The foot and base itself is extremely similar also, along with the fluidity of painting on the outside rim.
Again I could be wrong but I think its a pretty good guess for now.
Asher
For what it is worth I agree it is late Meiji /early Taisho. You often see those roundels in red on Imari plates. Although they are perfectly positioned on this bowl, they do give it an asymmetrical look which can appear unbalanced, but Japanese designs are like that, I think it fits their world view: I can't remember exactly but things don't have to be perfect. I suppose what appears chaotic might be nothing of the sort, it is just something dancing to a different tune so to speak.
I don't think I have explained well, but there is bound to be info online.
Edit: look up wabi-sabi that is what I am talking about. Sorry ended up deleting my original post in testing to see if the site is playing up a bit or if it is my wifi!
