Hello all, sorry been a-wall for a while.. Hope everyone is doing well. 🙂
A close friend of mine wanted me to post his "jade turtle" figure and see what the consensus was about the age of this carving? I am hoping Mark is still out there watching as well. Hey Mark! Everyone here is so helpful and knowledgeable and I am grateful for this forum beyond words. It sure saves a lot of tail chasing for me anyways.. lol
Ok, here are some photos of the little guy. THANKS SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!
Doug
Thank you Mark, nice to hear from ya! 🙂 Ok I will let him know, He has a piece that looks like it might be an archaic jade and it is opaque (not translucent at all) I will try to see if he will let me photograph it and send pics.
Oh on the turtle, do you think there is a possibility it is jadeite or do you think it is an entirely different material like serpentine or soapstone etc? Quartz.. Gosh I guess there are a lot of stones that can be polished to look similar.. 🙂
Hope you are doing well my friend. I sure appreciate the help! You rock man!
Doug C 🙂
Hi Doug,
It's definitely not soapstone. Highly probable to be serpentine.
Archaic jades are very difficult to determine as they have replicated some very nice examples.
Not my area btw. I am more into later jades etc.
But I can always have a look for you/friend and offer my opinion. We also have @xin_fawis, @avatar and @shine who are excellent with jades.
Mark
Serpentine.. That was my next guess too. I didn't realize it could be white as well that's a good lesson for me. Thanks Mark as always for your kind help! I really do appreciate it. 🙂 Grateful always and wishing you the best in all.
Your friend, Doug 🙂
High Doug,
White serpentine is often sold as white jade. Which is problematic.
It's normally has a very distinctive white with veining. Often multiple. This can also be seen in agate. It needs to be held up and viewed with a strong lighting conditions.
Here is a example of bowenite. Often also sold as jade. Has distinctive white blotches and ultra translucency in places:
Here are few examples of white serpentine :
Thank you Mark, this is very helpful! I see where it can get really confusing very fast when the piece is polished profusely and perhaps even waxed as well? It is good to see the material in it's natural state as well. Thanks so much for the photos!
This is very much appreciated indeed. 🙂
Doug
@xin_fawis Thank you. I appreciate it! 🙂
If you guys don't mind, I would like to see if you think I am close on these 3 carved pieces I have laying around in my personal collection and *none were expensive*(btw). I myself have been assuming they were jade of some kind and all 3 are white. (give or take) lol... I know it's not really easy to give an opinion with these few pics.
.. and this just crossed my mind. 🙂
Ok.. these three pieces, I have been guessing as... 1. the rat (low grade nephrite) 2. The lucky symbol (serpentine) 3. The Disk (low grade jadeite) Am I close?? I am guessing none of these are antiques or high grade at all but trying to get better with materials themselves. Thank you in advance!! I humbly appreciate the help.. You guys are great!
Doug
Also, I apologize in advance here for asking so many questions but there is SO MUCH of this stuff circulating everywhere now days.. It feels like drowning in a sea of fake (jade like) objects!!! I find myself wishing that someone would come up with a (Specific Gravity Instant Testing Machine for Jade and Jade-Like objects) LOL
@lep Thanks.. I am glad it's not just me who is confused.. LOL 🙂
Hi Doug,
The rat could be either jade or serpentine. The images are too blurry.
The disc is not jadeite jade. Once again the image is blurry. Could be jade (treated) or serpentine.
The last one is definitely not jade. It's bowenite.
All there are modern pieces.
Mark
LOL.. Well at least that almost one out of three.. 🙂 I will try to see if I can get some better pics of the rat and the disk. The fancy looking one is bowenite? I knew the material looked sort of off. The rat has a more waxy looking surface to it. I will get some better pics of the disk and the rat. It is good to know what bowenite looks like for sure I have heard of it before.. I see a lot of that type of carving around these days in that sort of material. I figured none were really valuable there but it is nice to get help with these different materials. It gets mind boggling pretty fast.
Thank you very much Mark.. I really appreciate your patience. I think I have at least gotten to where I'm not buying plastic or glass anymore hahaha. I have been fooled with quartz though several times and agate also.
Thanks for being so kind about it.. 🙂
At least I can get some positive identification now on these things!
Side note.. I read that jade is found in a serpentine matrix sometimes, is that correct?? If so thats wild!
