Here are two Buddha's head, they are small, with holes. I think they are beads. Was told they were from Tang period. Please comment, and let me know what to look for.
I would be very careful about buying these jades.
To my eye that look both modern and treated.
Perhaps @Xin_fawis can offer an opinion. I tend to keep away from these archaic jades.
Mark
Mark,
Thanks for your input. Can you tell me what are the things you look at. I hope I can learn from your input. I bought these also from Taiwan. When I first started looking for these antique jades, I look at the carving styles, but of course, those can always be imitated. Similarly for the surface alterations, like a lot of the white patches or dissolved pits, the people who wanted to sell them will try to make the pieces look old.
Do you know of any books or articles on how to or what to look for in determining a piece is "made to look old"?
@hanso
One book that is used by leading auction houses, museums and leading dealers is the following one.
Chinese jade from the Neolithic to the Qing period by Jessica Rawson. You can get this one ebay. But it's not cheap.
Also jade by Roger keverne is good. Has some interesting articles by leading dealers etc.
Any books by Sam Bernstein are very good. He is a renowned dealer and expert who operates out of San Francisco. I think he has written about 13 books. A couple I believe deal with tooling methods.
Your absolutely correct. Jades are being copied to a high standard. Especially archaic jades. It's a minefield. I generally don't deal with jades prior to about the Yuan-Ming period. Unless they have impeccable provenance. And even then they are expensive.
Each period has its own style, design and carving methods. These are often mixed or altered slightly to reflect the latest trend for the times. Its also important to to understand the type of jades used during the reigns.
Often the fakers will exaggerate certain aspects of the carving. But more importantly the older carvings took a long time to carve. The later copies have time restrictions. So certain details are often overlooked.
Along with understanding styles. It's vitally important to learn and understand the stone itself. And to be able to identify simulation. It takes years to learn my the skills etc.
You can learn a lot from articles and books etc. But you must be able to handle as many as you can. Obviously ones in museums are out of the question but auctions are not.
If you like you can contact me any time. I have other articles and websites you can visit and study. It's far more detailed than I can address here in one post.
I do have somewhere a folder on carving tooling etc etc. However I moved house a few months ago and I've not found it yet.
Collecting jades is a wonderful and soothing experience.
