Hi guys,

I recently acquired this pair of pretty ladies, at least I thought so. My husband thinks their foreheads are huge. Mark says: Daqing Guangxu Nian zhi”. They have the face features like “tongzhi “ period,  so maybe they are Republic? And I have a hard time to find other green border dishes. Thanks for all your help.

@yinchris,

Hi Yin,

They are indeed a pair of beautiful dishes. Very unusual. Never seen one's like these before.

I personally think that they are neither Guangxu nor Republican period. I believe thar they are later. Perhaps 80's. But others may differ from my opinion and go with a earlier period.

But exceptionally well-done.

I like them very much.

@yinchris Can you post a close up photo of the face in strong light?  I would like to see the texture and color of the enamels in strong natural light.

The women seem to be renderd in a 19th c. manner, but the mark and underside seem unconvincing to me as late Qing or Republic.

I think the plates are attractive, but without seeing the aristry closer, I can not judge the age.

@yinchris Beautiful! The second photo is the better of the two, showing the delicate blush of the face, beautiful upturned eye, and the vibrant and confident brush strokes of a quality Canton porcelain piece.  I would say Guangxu is reasonable, or maybe better described as late Qing, but it is not of imperial work despite being quite nice.

Interesting with @Greeno107 comments.

The main reason why I think this is later is the hair. Its jet black with absolutely no shading. Its just there with no strands showing etc etc.

My understanding is that jet black was used profusely during the Republic period. But rarely seen during the guangxu period. It's more of a mellow black. Not jet black.

@imperialfinegems These plates appear to be rendered more in line with the style of rose medallion (Canton) where the hair is just solid.

However, the plates display a single portraiture, very nicely done, so the rendering is superior to just plain rose medallion.

The mark and foot are not at all what I would expect on late 19th Canton, so perhaps a mainland porcelain plate that was decorated in Canton?

I recall seeing some vases in the past year that had single figure renderings, but I didn't take any photos....so far, I've got nothing to compare (just my gut).

@Greeno107,el

Everything looks fine for late guangxu to early republic period. It's just that jet black.

One of the first things that i learned when I first started with guangxu period porcelain was to be very careful with depictions that are pure jet black.

@Greeno107,

I don't know as its in Chinese.

But the site apparently is full of new fakes. At 500 yuan that's about $82 usd.

After looking at the pictures and before reading your posts I thought: nicely painted but the hair is wrong. Also the yellow and green railing would have been more restrained in Guangxu/Republic. I agree with Mark, 21st century.

I thought the back and clothes fairly convincing but not the head. The double line to the chin is strange, the hair is hard and the eyes not quite right. I agree probably 21st century, maybe 20th, but very nicely done.

@imperialfinegems

Mark, nailed it!  The plate on the website is selling by an antique store in Jingdezheng, who has a good feedback however I did check his other items, some of them are reproductions (when I can tell).  Alright, mines up for the decoration shelf now- at least they are pretty to look at.

Thanks everyone for your inputs, too much to learn........

Yin
