Hello everyone, I am trying to identify and find value on a large vase that my great grandparents bought. My grandmother currently has it at her house and I only have a couple of pictures. I can take more in a couple of days. It was purchased at an auction in 1934. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Your vase that you posted is massive.
We would need more pictures etc. Especially of the base.
I believe that it is Japanese. But would need to see the base to be certain.

Hi,
I second Mark's welcome and amazement at the size of your vase. It looks to be Kyoto satsuma from probably late Meiji period, or thereabouts so early 20th c. Better pictures would be needed to be certain, but if you do a search on Kyoto satsuma you will be able to make comparisons yourself.
I have not come across one that large! So although these wares are not as valuable as Satsuma pieces, the size will boost the value of your item assuming the condition is good.

Definitely Japanese. In my opinion circa 1920's/30's.
The quality is below that of similar examples from the Meiji period. Japanese porcelain/other was really at the pinnacle of quality during the Meiji period that wasn't followed through subsequent periods.
Nether the less it's made up by the massive size.
Real pity about the crack. It's going to significantly impact the value.

Yeah I think it was cracked when my great grandparents bought it back in 1934 and that’s why my grandma said they got it for a lower price at the auction. I really appreciate the information though! Thanks!

I was just reviewing your post again.
It may not be a crack. But could be a firing flaw. Common especially with the massive size.
If it's a firing flaw then its unlikely to go all the way through. So check it with water. Also check to see if the flaw or crack travels up the side of the vase. If it stops at the base only then it could be a firing flaw. If it travels up the side of the vase then it is a crack.

If it is not a firing issue and actually is a crack how much would you estimate as a value? A worst and best case scenario? My grandma will probably keep it for now as it’s a sentimental piece for her, but it would be nice to know. Thank you all for your help.
It is definitely kyoto satsuma, they are a less desirable style and some are not very attractive. For comparison, I think yours is much nicer than this:
That is just a comparison for style. The asking prices of these vary, not just on condition and quality, but according to what site they are on. For example, 1stDibs is selling one at £495 for a 43 cms vase whereas a 49 cms vase sold on Catawiki for 60 euros. I still haven't found anything bigger, but as these aren't highly desirable, the price really depends how many people want something or how much one person is prepared to buy it for.
