I saw these two jars for sale locally at auction and need help understanding their age and value so I can decide if they are worth purchasing. Both are missing lids, the larger one has a long hairline. I'm still learning but my guess is that they are from about 1900? Maybe the larger one is as late as mid 1900s? Please let me know what you think.

These seem like they should be easy to tell their age but I just haven't learn how to yet. Can you help me understand what makes them 20th so I can train my eye?

The larger one has the wrong foot base. The way that the flowers and stems are painted are poorly done. Both are trying to Kangxi period but they fail. Always be very careful with Kangxi porcelain with reign marks. Especially done in the way that your examples were done. Exceptionally rare.
Note the ribbed interior. This shows you that thr inside was scooped out by hand. Not a fast rule as some fakes now have this effect.
You need to view as many of these as you can. Preferably at one of the major auction houses like Sotheby's or Christies.
Most of the earlier ones have that cracked blue ice effect rather than the vibrant blue brush strokes. But not all of them!
There was a discussion here about 4 years ago on said jars and how to date them. Perhaps have a look. Its s lengthy discussion of over 7 pages. Unfortunately I am using a mobile phone atm. So i can't provide you with a link. Perhaps others maybe able to help etc.
Here is one recently sold on eBay. Its a genuine Kangxi example. Can you see the difference?

No problem.
At first collecting Asian art may appear daunting.
But with time and study you will become efficient.
I would strongly suggest to you to pick a period or style that you are most interested. Such as Republican period. Rather than trying to do the whole periods in one study.
Once you have gained sufficient knowledge in said area you can move on to the next level. Such as porcelain, bronzes or jades etc etc.
This forum is a very valuable tool to use.

@clj I find these ginger jars to be confusing. I think blue and white is tough in general to date because there are fewer tells involved and it has been made for so long now. Vessel shape, glaze tone, and footrims are keys to dating for sure. But even though I have managed to learn a bit and I have bought a lot of asian antiques at this point, I tend to shy away from ginger jars because I just can't seem to get confident about them. Having said that publicly, I will probably come across one tomorrow I like and buy it. Cheers! John
