hope everyone had a nice Veterans Day.
Im stuck on the date and value of this old wood stand which I’m almost certain is rosewood. It’s about 9” diameter and close to 3” high, so it’s a large size.

Old genuine stands are highly collectable atm and can command high prices. Hence the market for reproductions has exploded over the last decade or so. Collectors are always looking for nice stands for their collection.
They are almost always either highly decorative or simple depending in part on the type of wood used etc. But they are almost always very heavy/solid feel to them.
The modern ones are much much lighter and are imo either veneered or a composite of wood to resemble old ones.
Based on just your pictures it is my judgement that it is probably modern.

It could be the photographs cause this one is solid; very heavy. I bought this over 20 years ago and it also had a reddish tone to the wood so it looks like rosewood. I’m wondering what the holes to underside were used for.

Based on that weight and size I think it might old (19th Century) and probable Rosewood. Very heavy indeed!
I can now see weathering marks on the top.
Last time I had one like yours that was old and heavy I bought it from a Vietnamese antique type outlet for $240 AUD. I later resold it for $900.
Would like to hear what others may think given this new posting with additional information.

Yes, there’s a lot of weathering marks, scratches, etc.
I remember an old retired antique dealer telling me “ that’s a good one.” Also, the lady I bought it from had the most amazing coral and ivory pieces I had ever seen. I sold those years ago.
Im looking forward to some more replies and I think I’ll photograph it in natural light.
You sold yours for $900? Good for you... I could only hope to sell mine for anything close to that.

In Peter's newsletter there is another one that is currently about $250 USD = $375 AUD It's heavily damaged unlike yours. I have seen many genuine ones sell for about $1000 on ebay.
Collectors who own old porcelain are paying huge amounts for genuine stands for their items.
Not that long ago said stands were worth nothing!

Yes, I’m keeping watch on the one Peter has on the newsletter. It has beautiful carving but as you said, very damaged.
I wonder if I should take some photos outdoors and send them to Peter. I was hoping to list it this Thursday. Maybe I’ll get lucky and he’ll post mine. 😊

There is a London based dealer who specialises in wooden stands, most dating 19th but some to 18th century, who's prices start from under £100. However, as Mark points out, pieces made from desirable woods and with high quality carving can easily reach four figures ...!!!
I will defer to Mark thoughts on this piece, but hope the photos forwarded to/appraisal from Peter prove helpful ...
As an aside any object, when placed upon the correct stand, can make a huge visual difference ...
