My competition was in the same shop grabbing everything it was all junk. But I found this lamp and they walked right past it. It looks right for being authentic. Any opinions greatly appreciated. Oh it was $40 bucks
@imperialfinegems thanks Mark I’m curious why you think it’s Japanese I don’t know so looking for identification tips? It does have a mark.
High base/thick footrim IMO.
The style is similar to Chinese but I think it's Japanese.
I could be wrong as bronzes are not my strong point.

@imperialfinegems I did get someone on the bronze forum say as old as Yuan so I can hope.
@lotusblack I also think it is likely to be Japanese Meiji. Let us know what Peter says.
I had a conversation yesterday about this bronze from a very experienced bronze collector he told me it’s most likely Ming period it was a very popular style during this period and showed me several comparisons from Christie’s and Sotheby’s. It’s considered tadpole motif. The hard part he told me that Japanese and Chinese made these bronze gu vases at the same period and they are so close that even Majors auction house can not tell who casted the bronze. But due to the style know the period. Either way due to this the bronzes values are undervalued because it’s a guess but even being under valued my bronze is worth 10 to 20 times what I paid for it. Let’s wait on Peters thoughs.
- I had another reply as to the mark “Long an” which is a fruit used during ceremonies (etc) a wedding it is used for good luck of having fast children (a boy) so this bronze gu was used in an wedding to bless the couple with children. So my question is does anyone know what the tadpole symbols represent?
