Before I even ask the seller for the price of this bowl (and start saving) I'd like to know if it's really Hongwu or a modern copy. The color and glazing faults make me think it could be old, but then underglaze red is sought after and fakers are getting better all the time. What is your opinion?

I can’t see any photos on the google link. It may just be me. Bidamount has been playing up terribly for me the last few days.

I can see them but know nothing about this so won't pass any judgments except to ask if that is all the available photos? I would quite like to see the inner edge and the bit that looks like a crack close up.

Totally wrong in every aspect - underglaze red colour, peony design, shape, glaze, footrim and base all incorrect - a terrible, blatant fake ....
You are quite correct - a known Hongwu type - but an attempted copy of such ... Walk away ...

Thanks a lot Stuart! It seems that 99,99% of Ming underglaze red on the market is a fake. The remaining 0,01% I will never be able to afford. 😢

This bowl shape is not a known Hongwu type, the design combinations are wrong, and the painting style of these betray the copyist hand. The finishing of foot and base is also incorrect for this period.
You are quite correct, there appears to be a number of these faked underglazed red pieces been offered on the market.
The authentic, genuine pieces are very desirable, and therefore rather expensive ...

Hongwu was what the seller said, I’d have had no idea.I‘m a bit disappointed for I have already bought an authentic item from him, the Ming plate with the two ladies that we talked about recently. Seems to be one of the sellers that mix old and new, I’ll be careful from now on.

This sellers website has been running for many years.
It use to be reliable offering good and sometimes very rare, interesting pieces but, in recent years, the site appears to have rather a lot of 'yesterday'(or new) pieces mixed in with some genuine ones. Unfortunately the latter are getting fewer and fewer ....
