Can someone help me to find the age of this table and type of wood ? Thanks
Hi from said low quality pictures it is very difficult to period date said table, but I will try.
It appears on the surface to date from late qing early republic, that is late 19th century early 20th century.
I have concerns with picture # 3 with the different colouring half way up the RHS. Also the two darken spots at the top of same picture.
I also have concerns regarding the carving design/style.
I also have concerns with the length. It is common for Qing period tables that were long to be cut in half and then sold as genuine, even more so today. This one is quite small in length.
The wood appears to be a hardwood.
I note that you have not provided a picture of the underside. There should be no glue or nails.
Is this something you own or looking at to buy?
Mark
BTW there are a lot of so-called antique tables coming out of China that are reproductions.
That is why I asked if it was something you owned or other.
Mark
Hi mark, it is something I am looking to buy. I saw it for sale at a local store.
Hi,
What price are they asking for it?
Is this a specialist store or other?
What are they claiming the period from and is this just one or are there other tables on offer?
What expertise do they have/claim and how long have they been in business for?
When you look around the store, do you feel that this is a genuine antique shop or a shop full of repo's.
Mark
From memory I think they are asking 500-600 dollars. It's just a general antique store, it's probably the only chinese item they have. They haven't made in claim regarding the age. It feels old but with chinese antiques, I know fakes can be very convincing.
You really need someone with expertise to examine this in person; furniture is such a specialist area, some pieces are 'made up' from several older bits of other furniture, or just faked with wear and distress added.
If it's an antique store they should have some idea , right, that's their business and they are asking a decent wedge of cash for something they know little about., and which could be modern.
One side of the decoration is darker than the other , is that patina or something else? I would also , like another poster, question why one leg changes colour half way down: surely not natural , nor caused by years of wear , so why ?
From the photos also it looks like the table top is not associated with the underside , different wood maybe , and might have been added later
tam
I concur with Tam18 sentiments.
Since they cant tell you anything about it I would tend to side on caution and lean towards it being modern and my advice to you is either as tam posts have someone who knows what they are doing actually look at it for you or give it a miss.
A lot of these tables turn up either in antique shops or at auction with very little said about them. As I told you before tables of this size are not common especially since it has no draws, and have been cut up from one to make three or more tables with extra pieces to try to give it some age.
Save your money, and if you want to buy furniture, please try to get provenance. It is not that difficult to find if you have patience!
