Bought this nice little saucer dish on the Ebay today , very cheap may i add so there is a possibility that it is a copy , Ming period small saucer with boys , marked with a very loose (I am guessing late Ming mark) on the back . I want to get a closer look at the piece and the footrim in particular . Any thoughts?
The decoration looks OK to me , the style of the boys in particular .

It doesn't look Ming to me, neither the foot rim nor the painting of the boys. Rather modern I'm afraid, but let's wait for our experts.

The painting style looks very loose, even the way the mark is painted is very loose. It will be interesting to see what the experts think.

I agree with Shinigami, it's a modern piece, not Ming. The boys are a Kangxi motif and very poorly painted.

I think the boys look fine for late Ming , the footrim looks to have a 2-3 mm unglazed part which is also OK, you see many similar dishes / saucers which were made for the Japanese market during the late Ming period which have rougher bases which was done intentionally for the Japanese taste . I have also seen loose marks like this on genuine pieces also , but these are just observations and i am not qualified enough to say yes or no. When i get the piece in hand i will get a feel for it and probably know more straight away.

Dear Carl,
I would have concerns about this dish if it was advertised as being of the Ming period. I do not believe that it is, so it is a comfortable thing to hear that you have not paid a high price for it.
The four-character mark, da ming nian zhi, would be highly unusual to find standing alone by itself, not to mention the fact that the characters are somewhat overhasty and casually done. Then, as has already been pointed out, the drawing of the boys is faintly reminiscent of Kangxi-style boys, hence incompatible with what we find happening during the Ming, were the item to be genuinely belonging to that period.
While it is of course true that a group of porcelains in a Ming style appears during the seventeenth and eighteenth century, and that these porcelains were provided with retrospective reign marks to help further an impression of revered antiquity, I don't think that that particular porcelain group would accommodate what we see of the dish as shown in the photographs either.
As you say, you will have an even better feel for it once it arrives in your post box.

I am sorry but all the previous opinions are right, there is no chance for it being Ming or Qing, it is new.

It was only a very cheap punt , I don't spent large amounts of money on mark and period items on Ebay for obvious reasons , It will be an interesting learning piece .

The painting of the figures is awful, imo, and the dish is surely new. Not sure there is much to be learnt from buying such pieces, other than we all learn from mistakes. It has been said before here, but it's best to ask for advice before you buy .
