Hello all, I got this recently at an auction and it was listed as a 7 inch Kangxi mark of 'birds'. It doesn't look like a bird when I picked it up, looks more like fruit, pomegranate? Peaches? The mark is a 4-character and is as an underglaze. The images are definitely over glaze. I'm wondering if it is copper red or not? There are three of them around the vase. Thanks, Richard

Hi,

Looks like peaches to me. The base looks 19th c but I find this vase quite strange. Have you adjusted the colours at all? The background colour and the decoration are not a harmonious pairing. Also, the little bit of branch/leaves seems too strident and harsh.

That could all be down to the photos, though.

Julia

The style reminds me of a late Qing teacaddy I have. The red is underglaze and quite thickly applied. I like your vase and think it's another example from the late Qing underglaze revival. The technique had almost been forgotten by that time.

Could it be the pictures are too yellowish as Julia already said?

The vase is actually pure white, that is my picture taking or lack of the ability to take a good picture! Here is a better shot against a white backdrop. Richard

The glaze which for the fruit is on the surface runs a bit downward as the glaze at the bottom of the fruit is thicker than at the top. It is also uneven and thickly applied. The leaves and stems are also overglaze but with less material and did not run of flow downward on firing a second time. The base signature is definitely an underglaze signature. I have looked for similar vases on various websites but have not found anything close. If there are examples, please provide a photo. Thanks, Richard

@quarker48

Hi Richard -

The four-character base mark reads ‘Kang Xi Nian Zhi’, which can be translated as ‘Kangxi period ordered/made’ ….

This mark is commonly found on pieces dated to the late 19th century, produced during the so called ‘Kangxi revival’, but is also seen on later 20th century pieces …

Not really my area, but I would concur with Julia @Julia and Brigit @shinigami, the footrim and base indicate a late Qing date …

That's a better photo. It looks like a rather nice late Qing vase.😊

I'm still convinced it's underglaze red and blue. Especially the way the red has green spots which in the case of the peaches is a lovely and desired effect. Unfortunately I don't have the tea caddy at hand to take a better picture but you might see the same thick red/green color which is thick and uneven.

So big difference between a 17th-18th century piece versus a late 19th century piece, what are the ways of finding out which period it really is from? This is always the conundrum as everyone copied everyone, not necessarily for nefarious reasons but rather to emulate. The mark is different than any references I have found. Does anyone see a similar piece with this mark? Or foot rims that can help determine what period it came from?

Four character marks are often seen in the later 19th c, but rarely during the Kangxi period.

Quoting here from Gotheborg website:

All four character Kangxi marks without borders are from and around the Guangxu (1875-1908) period when four character kaishu marks were widely used.

Nice looking vase. The white balance changed its entire essence.

I changed the listing to 'apocryphal' given all the information that I found and that has come in from all of you! Thanks, really appreciate the input! Imagine though, if it was indeed a piece, designated for the emperor! Good grief, it would allow me and my children to semi-retire! As nearly all of them are in institutional holdings...like Taiwan! China! and England...

Thanks again to all! What a journey!

Cheers!

Richard

It's closing on This Thursday at Auction Ninja under 'Calix Books'...I know, books? Porcelain? Hey, I like Japanese and Chinese Porcelains, a lot! No bids so far...Maybe my start is too high? But I really don't want it going for a song and a dance...
