Hi,
Please can someone help me with this mark? It is described as a Republic style brush pot, so the opening bid is very low. I think it is attractive and am wondering if it might be earlier than they think - the style reminds me a bit of that planter from early 20th c, that was discussed a little while ago. I will include a few pictures of the item in case that helps. The remaining 2 sides are birds in trees.
Thank you.
Julia
Thank you for looking it up. The auction people clearly think it is later but I know from experience that Chinese stuff isn't their strong point.
The opening bid is only £18 so I will have a go, but there are several people interested.
Thanks for your help!
Hi Julia -
Not really my area, but this looks very nice and also interestingly shaped ...
Such brush pots, especially those which included calligraphy, are very popular and highly desirable ...
Best of luck bidding on ...
Stuart
Thanks, Stuart. I will let you know how it goes.
Hi Julia,
Unfortunately in my opinion this brush pot is probably a product of the second half of the 20th century. Perhaps early 1950's but I do not think it is republic period. Even though it appears to be hand-painted.
I believe that because the style and calligraphy is based on two republican masters from the 'eight friends of zushan'. The fish and reeves is based on works by Deng Bishan 1874-1930. The other is bamboo on rocks by Xu Zhongnan 1872-1953. Both these/others were known to work together on projects. Their works are highly collectable and therefore also widely copied. Genuine examples bearing both these masters hand can command well in excess of $60,000usd
I am unable to enlarge your pictures however it is my firm belief that these depictions are not by the said masters but later copies/attributes. And in my opinion poorly done.
Personally as I believe this is a later copy than republic period I would not buy this.
Below is a genuine work by the master Xu Zhongnan that I currently own. The other image by Deng Bishan is taken from the book 'Chinese porcelain of the republic period' by Simon Kwan. Please note the distinct difference in both styles and calligraphy /seal mark. Copies of said artists and other members of the famed eight are widely available. Some are superb like the example I posted earlier today by Wang Qi. However they (the copies) seemed to always fail when it comes to the calligraphy and read marks.
Please proceed with caution! Bearing in mind that this bitong may be a later than thought copy. I would have liked to see inside. So bid accordingly.
Mark
Hi Mark, I rarely disagree with you but in this case I think it's not trying to copy some master but was just made in a style popular at the time. The bottom and surface, as far as I can see on the pictures, look quite ok for Republic, also that it looks a bit irregular and handmade. Later copies would have a much more perfect appearance. Just think of the endless "beautiful ladies" vases that are offered as Republic on Ebay. One would have to handle this item in person to come to a decision.
Birgit
I agree the foot and general style look OK for a republican period pot, but the potting is thick and not especially elegant, and the painted panels are strange - the fish are painted in a very similar and stiff way, and what is that yellow disc in the water? a reflection of the sun? Not well done , imo
Also the inscription and seal above the fish panel is crammed in to an awkward position and looks odd too.
I wouldn't buy it
tam
Hi Birgit,
I believe copies or attributes for the reason that I think the calligraphy mentions or infers 'made by...'
I do not nor can I speak Chinese so I maybe totally wrong with the following observation. I sort of tried to compare some of the symbols painted on the Xu Zhongnan side of the brush pot with my plaque. I see similar letters on my plaque towards the end of poem indicating 'old man in bamboo Xu Zhongnan'.
Perhaps members such as gfhandle aka George or indeed others profient could clarify the markings.
I agree with you dear Birgit that it's probably not later 20th century for the reasons posted, but it could be from the early 1950's. I would have certainly liked to view the inside.
Mark
Hi all,
Sorry, been out digging up potatoes!
Thanks for all the supplementary comments. I will bear all that in mind. The painting isn't the highest quality which is why I alluded to this thread:
However, I did fail to check inside it. There were a couple of other things I am hoping to go back to look at - the auction isn't for a while - so I will try to get a photo of it.
It is interesting to hear all the views on this, it is not an area I feel secure with, so I really appreciate the help.
Julia
I wouldn't be very confident dating it to the republic period and you usually see marks written this way on later pieces. There is also something about the wear that makes me feel uncomfortable.
I wouldn't bid on it with the intend to purchase a collectible piece.
Mark,
Leftmost line includes a date October 1939 with an “Old man in bamboo Xu Chungnan” signature. But as you mentioned there are many copies of his works so I must leave authenticity to the experts.
George

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
