Hello and Merry Christmas to all who celebrate!

 I would be so grateful for help in identifying whether this bowl is fake or not. Catawiki sells SO many fakes these days that it takes careful screening.

About a year ago I bought a somewhat similar bowl from them, and unfortunately had Peter look at it when it was too late. He dismissed it as a fake!

There are several more photos if you link to the site.

Thank you for any assistance here.

It is nice-looking but I don't know enough to say if it is genuine.  However, the following information/comparisons may be useful - apologies if you have seen these already. I am not saying yours is a shipwreck piece (I really don't know) and yours has more glaze than many, but that is touched upon in the first link. Hope someone can help you further.

@julia thanks so much Julia. I haven’t seen this before; it’s very helpful. ! I think I’ll skip bidding on this bowl, as I am still too uncertain.

@charlotte passing is probably a wise choice unless you are certain on these types.

@johnshoe thanks John. Yes, and just now I had a look at this seller’s other items for sale on Catawiki, and they’re ALL fakes, minus one, maybe. Besides, the glaze on the so-called Song bowl looks a bit too glossy. Catawiki is best avoided I think, for most things, unless one is absolutely certain.

@charlotte

My gut feeling is that this bowl has an age prior to Ming period as I have handled a few in my time. This style seems to have been mass produced, but it does have age to it.

@gfhandel Thank you so much! I certainly see what you’re saying, and that’s why I was drawn to it at first. I love these kinds of bowls, and I would like to add one to my collection of Asian Art. I appreciate your input so much!

The Catawiki seller‘s other items don’t seem fake to me. Most looks 18th century to me. The marked Wanli bowl is interesting as they say it was authenticated by Peter Combs. They say „probably Wanli“ and there’s already much interest.

I don't normally view Catawiki lots because shipping is not yet available to Australia.

The dish mentioned by dear Birgit @shinigami is a beautiful small dish.

In my opinion its a genuine dish. From either the Wanli m&p or a little bit later Kangxi example. It would need to be handled.

At the moment it's getting a lot of interest at €2810.

The seller @advantique is located in the Netherlands. His name rings a bell. He maybe a member here.

The other b&w lot's appear to be genuine.

Here is a very similar one sold by Christie's in 2018. Unfortunately only one image is available.

@charlotte @gfhandel @shinigami @imperialfinegems

Hi Charlotte, George, Birgit, Mark and all -

As with Mark, I rarely view Catawiki either …

I would concur with George @gfhandel, from the images the Longquan bowl appears to exhibit some age/ware, but age/wear is easily faked and such pieces have appeared on the market, both at auction houses and online websites, in large numbers over several decades, so caution is certainly required …

As for the Wanli dish, this is a well known type ordered in large numbers for the Imperial Court. I have seen/handled quite a few over the years, the painting style, overall motif composition and quality can vary …

Based on the images I would agree with Mark, it may be a mark/period example. But again, such pieces are also been faked so it would definitely need to be viewed, examined and handling to confirm …

Thank you to all. I suppose I should have been more careful in denouncing the seller’s other objects as almost all fakes. I just get somewhat cynical about Catawiki these days, due to a bad experience with a fake, and also because they actually do sell many fakes and copies. I collect Japanese hanging scrolls, including contemporary ones, and Catawiki sometimes offers very nice ones, so that is mostly why I still go there.

Thank you all for enlightening me about the B&W plates not being fake, but actually Kangxi!

Best Regards,

Charlotte
