A relative of mine got this vase at some auction sometime ago. He's not really an expert on these things and asked me what I thought of it. I went totally blank since celadon all looks the same to me 🤣 Here are some pics he sent over. Can the forum help him out a bit?

I can't tell you if this is old.  It's lovely though.

@rahawkins I think so, too! But my favorite color is the jade blue, although I don't think I'll ever come across an authentic one that I can afford.

I should add that this one is about 9 inches tall and feels quite heavy when held at the neck.

BTW, does anyone know what those "piercings" at the foot rim are for? There are two of them on either side. I've seen them on some celadon vases.

I'm not sure, but the footrim appears to be peeling, which might be a bad sign. And the fact that it has three labels, none of which can be read, makes it appear they might have been done that way on purpose in an attempt to fake age and importance. Others with more knowledge will have to chime in, but I am suspicious of it. John

@johnshoe I was the one who took those two photos focusing on the "peeling" rim 😀 I thought it looked odd but didn't want to say anything to sound stupid since it's really not something I'm knowledgeable of. There are a lot of these celadon vases floating around so chances of it being not good are not slim.

I'm not sure about the base either, the brown looks strange. I also feel the shape is a bit squat, but that could be photo angles. Also, old celadons have an unctuous, matte glaze, this seems a bit shiny - again, that could be the photos.

As you say, there are a lot of copies around. I am going to have to try to find out about the holes in the foot rim, I am intrigued!

I don’t think it’s old, it has no traces of age but looks fresh from the kiln. And the labels are suspicious and it’s too shiny as John and Julia said.

@singingteapot

Hi -

The form is based on/coping known Song Longquan/Guan glazed pieces, but the overall shape, proportions, glaze, footrim and base finishing are wrong …

I will post some images later for comparison …

Concur with John, Julia and Birgit its not very old, second half of 20th century - at best …

The shape is correct for Song dynasty Longquan ware. This one should be in a Chinese museum.

Should be in a Japanese museum not a Chinese museum. My mistake.

@avatar It's quite incredible that you found this reference! This particular form appears to be uncommon and attributed to Southern Song. Now, the chances of this piece being genuine are even slimmer, lol.

Regarding the stickers...it's my bad that I didn't take clearer photos. I remember seeing VERY vague remnants of some old fonts in English, and there's one with a few letters showing still...I think "ese" or something like that. If I can get my hand on it again, I will take a better photo and maybe someone could recognize it. My gut says these labels are probably OK.

The glaze is kind of strange...it does appear quite sharp in the stock photos, but it is actually quite subdued in real life. You could see images, but the outlines are muffled and blurred. The glaze didn't seem too "wrong" to me, but again I haven't handled nearly enough to be able to tell.

For me the biggest issue is the foot. Since I have no understanding of how these foot rims were done, I can't determine whether this peeling/wrinkly effect is natural or not. It looks kind of fake...

Actually, the biggest issue is that it's supposed to be a museum piece!

@singingteapot

Hi -

Some words of advice/caution …

Much better images, especially of the glaze texture, footrim and base are required, and the piece would need to be seen/handled by someone who had expert knowledge of such wares, before any firm conclusion regarding this vase could be reached …

Perhaps your relative could make some enquiries to see if there are any museums within traveling distance which may have a Chinese ceramic specialist and, if so, arrange an appointment for them to see this piece …

It is well known that one of the methods used by fakers and copyist to deceive is placing old or new labels to bases then rub, tare and artificially dirty them to give an impression of some age/provenance - one must be very cautious …
