Could it be Southeast Asian, reminds me of Vietnamese?
Should be Japanese pottery with hand written Kanji. Something similar often can be found on Japanese Sake bottles.
I like that, John, where did you find it? I think it is probably Japanese, too. I can see resemblances to some Chinese and South Asian pieces, but my immediate impression was Japanese.

Fairly certain this is Cizhou Ware, Yuan/Ming, I am guessing most likely Ming.
If you clean it up a bit, I suspect you will see the edge of the slip, which is sort of visible now, extending past the cream/white glaze.
As far as I know these were all produced as domestic pieces, often you see rice bowls, and small dishes just for daily use.

That's interesting, Jeremy. I considered cizhou too, as that was my second thought. 😊 I found a few similar pieces but the decoration tended to be natural things or abstract symbols. Also, I think a lot of them had evidence on the foot rim or inside of being stacked. Do you think that is what those inside marks are near the lower part of the bowl?
@jbeer2121 Fantastic, I hadn't even considered that as an option. Here are some pictures after a little soap and water. I suppose I should soak it in something - what would you suggest?
@julia there is a ring of wear which can be seen that indicates another piece was stacked on it which I was wondering about. So are you saying it's your understanding they were stacked like that in the kiln? If so that would easily explain the ring.
Ah, is there? I will have another look as I a on my computer now and will be able to see better. Some dishes have like gritty patches on the foot rim from stacking and the inside of some pieces I saw had similar marks where they had stacked. I will see if I can find what I was looking at.
@johnshoe I'm late to the party. I agree with Jeremy that it looks good to be early, Ming or earlier. I wouldn't clean it too much. It's a delicate piece, so a later TL test might be risky for damaging it. Soap and water on the glazed areas...leave the unglazed areas be. If you have a particularely bad stain, try buying hydrogen peroxide paste (hair salon stores or maybe CVS), and dab it on the stained areas...leave it in bright sun, but check on it every few hours... you don't want a bright white spot to replace a stain. Personally, I'd leave well enough along.

I see the line you mean, that isn't what they look like. I was looking at the two little marks just outside it, but three should be more. The ring could well be a stacking ring, but it would then be a different process than the one I mentioned seeing.
The first link shows the marks on the foot and the interior. The second link is just interesting about cizhou decoration, it may help you decide whether it is of that type or not. Some japanese pieces also had evidence of stacking on the interior - although, given that George says it is a Chinese character , it does seem more likely to be found on a Chinese piece - or something made for the Chinese market, maybe?

I'm not sure if you guys noticed but it has underglaze blue streaks loosely circling the interior and I'm wondering if that is common on these types?
