Hi All,
I really like these little vases with applied dragons. The tallest one is about 4.5 inches tall. I have seen somewhat similar but less well-made things like this that I suspect are Republic. Are these two maybe late Qing? One is marked "CHINA" on the bottom.
Is there a name for this type of ware? I could not find anything similar, but I suspect that is because I don't know what to search for. Do they have any value (I think I paid too much for them...)?

my opinion is that they are post qing. they are nicer than i initially thought with a some above average detail on the dragons, especially with the mouth. the feet are not characteristic of late qing and the shapes also appear too modern - faintly reminiscent of some styles of weller, mccoy, roseville - certainly for the yellow piece. i would date them to 1920s-40s. they certainly have value and i would want to handle them before assigning value.
not being an expert, i would encourage you to wait for more informed responses.
Thanks, Tony. I was thinking they were at least pre-1920, since they had the CHINA mark on the bottom, and not Made in China. But I see you point, in terms of style.

The China mark was still used after the time it was supposed to say Made in China. I think these are later.
I am not expert on these either, but this is what I am thinking.
They are in the sancai style, but the applied dragon/bat I also found on a modern-looking blue and white jar - I will post a link - I am not sure it is Chinese with that decoration, but it is hard to say for sure. The reason I mention that is that the base of the your vase looks a bit Japanese, the applied dragons also have 3 claws, there is also the moriage-like lumps, but maybe that is how they were originally depicted in the Tang (?) dynasty, you could research that. Or maybe the Kangxi wares in this style were like that?
I find the yellow one attractive, but I don't particularly like the vase. Perhaps someone who knows about these things will see this thread. Here is the link to the other vase.
The Made in [Country] mark is not a hard and fast rule even though the tariff act of 1891 (?) required it. China and Japan were intransigent on the requirement and may have even been granted exceptions for a while and i think that the customs/tariff acts were updated yet again c. 1920 to address that point. the european country marks are generally more reliable concerning the import requirement.
In any event China as a mark is usually c. 1920 / prewar.
@tonyatl Good point, they also used paper labels to satisfy the import laws into the United States, which often do not survive attached to the piece, especially Japan. Also, Americans traveled a great deal to Europe and Asia and returned with items, a lot of missionaries to parts of Asia brought items back. I think I remember reading the late Brooke Astor was the child of missionaries to China.
P.S.Thought I better check about Brooke Astor, after posting, her Father was in the military, not a missionary, but did spend time in China growing up.
I just found this, which is certainly a kissing cousin, although it has a reign mark on the bottom and is slightly taller. The seller says it is 1900-1940. But they are also asking $1000, so I don't think they are experts on Chinese porcelain!
