Hey all, I acquired this today for a reasonable $50. It's a large piece, unmarked, has some hallmarks but I'm pretty sure it's 20th century, likely late based on how frequent these came around then. What I do see is a lot of uni-body casts, ie no removable pieces. There's very little actively listed which do not have a removable tail, and even less with the removable nodule on the back hump, whether or not it has the spot for it or it exists at all.
Note, these are glued on by a previous owner at some point. I can safely extract the glue though to restore originality so I'm not too worried about this.
Dimensions:
18cm/7.08in wide x 44cm/17.34in height x 61cm/24.01in long
There is an ongoing auction estate of David Warren which ends on the 18th this week, but the one identical piece on there matching this one has a missing nodule, and its a bit different on the scale, and more importantly, there is a hong kong stamp on the bottom base.
This piece has a fair amount of chips and dings across the body and the foot platform.
Am I right about its age?

Hi Preston!
I agree with you. This a 20th Century object. But a very nice display piece!

@detuned aye, there's no dirt and distinguishing features to show its an old piece, particularly a tomb piece given its purpose of the Tang Dynasty usage. Plus there's no record I can find which any dynasty goes back to recreate these exact forms and sizes. It's more brittle than I expected a new piece to be however, chips of the base platform are pulling off a bit.
I'm gonna call around this week and drop it into an auction since I need to downsize/refresh my inventory next.
Yeah, they certainly are not rare and acheived decorating cliche status like an eighties wooden duck.
The piece was probably not fiered at high enough temperatures resulting in it's brittle self. Fakers do this to suggest an older age, because many Tomb Pieces became wet and dryed again, resulting in such type of brittelness of the clay body and consequently cracks and flaws in the glaze.
I always find that the eyes of genuine pieces differ from newer fakes/copies.
All the Best for the Auction 😉
with Best Regards...
Carsten
@sharonp ironically I have a wooden duck staring at this piece across my bedroom, yet that was a carving from my grandfather. Might be stuck in an era but its timeless at the moment to me haha
@detuned very nice to know that detail, I'd call it a good attributation piece but not a clone at most then.
While we're on topic, the triangle line pattern shown on the side of the horse's sadle; what period does this pattern originate from? I've seen it much more frequently on late qing pieces with brocade decos but I know so little about it to really give it a timeline point. It'll help to know for future references later.
Here is my drawing of my eighties Decorating Cliches, an obelisk, Wood hen duck and a Taos wooden snake. Sharon
