Hi!....This is a recent Thrift purchase.....This is what I believe to be a Chinese Oxblood vase...it s in great condition no chips or cracks......its about 13 inches in height , 7inches width...has plenty of fine crazing...and a small scuff mark on one side.....when I purchased it there was the word China written on the bottom in a red paint of some type....there are no other marks that I have seen, .....the mark 14Y) in blue marker is the price and color of the ticket... after a little hot water and Dawn dish detergent the word China was gone.....the vase was $14.99!!......of which I thought was great!!......I'm guessing that its early 1930's maybe??......(wishful thinking).......I'm hoping that someone will know approximately how old this vase is.......Thanks!.......
Hi Alesia,
Did the word China look like the one in this thread? If so, Mark's info may be useful.
Julia
My feeling is this is quite recent, given the unworn footrim and the overall glaze effects : for example where the the red glaze meets the foot.

@julia....Im not sure....I've seen it before...a little of the word was already removed in a place or to......I wish I had taken a picture of before I washed it......and can I ask?....I have concerns about bringing vases home with the possibility of something being inside of it hitching a ride....so my habbit is to take it to the laundry room to fill it with hot water immediately after getting home......I will also heat hot water to boiling and fill the vase up and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes or so.....I did worry about it possibly cracking.....but then again these vases are fired at very high temperatures so the boiling hot water shouldn't cause any damage should it?.....I also put painters tape over the bottom of my porcelain figures just in case, to keep any insects from crawling out....
I know what you mean about something being inside! I think the problem with boiling water is a thermal shock issue - please someone correct me if I am using the wrong terms! The closer the items are to the same temperature the less risk of damage. But that may only apply to glass? And people?
Hope someone else can help with this. 😊
@tam18....well....for $14 its good..... I love it....its pretty......Thanks!
@julia.....I thought about that to....so if its winter....I just cover the opening with tape or plastic and allow the vase or whatever to get to room temperature after a few of hours...and then and wash it with warm to hot faucet water....and I add the heated water from the stove to to the other water....to temper it.....in hopes that it doesn't break
Hi Alesia,
Your oxblood vase is in my opinion a very nice example.
I dont think it's old say from the Late Qing period or republican. I think it is probably a bit later.
A good buy for $14 imo.
Mark
@imperialfinegems............do you know what's a bit later......the 60's or 70's?
Hi Alesia,
Could be anywhere from 1960's through to the 1980'S. It's virtually impossible to determine exactly when.
Mark

Yes, thermal shock is the correct term! And I think you're right to be worried about it. Pouring boiling or close-to-boiling water into a potentially old item seems very, very risky. I think a gentle wash with dish soap would be more than enough to remove any nefarious hitchhikers.
There are a few important features in old oxblood glaze, which help us identify the real ones. First, the glaze should look like it is “flowing”, very vibrant with good and natural color transitions from the top of the vase to the bottom; Second, there should be lots of pits on the glaze; and third, the underside glaze should be either apple green or pale brown. In my opinion, your vase is fairly new.
