Hello, All!
Next week there are several sales that have interesting items. I'm trying to make a decision on which to go. One sale is offering this plate, which they have no description. It appears to be a very elaborate ko-kutani plate of carp in water, with a kingfisher flying above (in front of the moon).
Crazy nice design, and some visible wear to the enamel, so it sure looks to be quite old. No idea of the size.
Any thoughts on the age?
Thanks!
Tim
Hi Tim,
Very hard to say without more pictures, especially of the back. I wouldn't be leaning that way. But it is absolutely great for my taste, especially that bird looking down at the fish. What is that, a kingfisher? Very cool.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
@watership Yes, it is a kingfisher!
I haven't physically handled a genuine 17th c. Japanese ko-kutani piece... maybe 1 or 2 kaikiemon pieces. I was guessing based upon the similarity in the rending of the kingfisher and a pair of swallows/martins on a 17th c. plate sold by Christie's.
Here's a comparison, followed by the Christie's link.
I think the overall looseness of the brush, and the buggy eyes, are quite similar. But, that's not to say that 19th c. pieces couldn't have the same manner of rendering. I just haven't seen anything quite like this plate.
I think I've made up my mind... I'm going to this sale for this piece. Still a week or so away, so plenty of time to hear from others.
@rahawkins You may be right. I tried giving you the thumbs up... gliche system? Won't let me.
This is a difficult one without images of the back.
However, with this border design along with the Kingfisher and what I believe are carp all in all a most interesting overall design.
Without any cobalt blue makes it even more difficult to determine. As readers would know that during the late Meiji period synthetic cobalt was first introduced.
So I am going with late Edo period through to early Meij period.
Mark
@imperialfinegems I think the waves sure have a late Edo look... Hokusai like. I'm hoping they won't price it as if was a Chinese famille verte.... you know these seller's often don't know what they have, so sometimes cheap, and other times ridiculously high priced.
@rahawkins I think it will be worth a bit more if not damaged, and especially if it turns out to be a large example. This example of what looks like a small kingfisher plate (Edo) sold by Sotheby's brought 3,250 pounds in 2019. It doesn't say specifically when in the Edo, or the size, but their plate certainly looks to me as 19th c. Anyway... I want it, so it looks like I'm camping out next week.

@kirby13 Thanks! I've been study the one photo... looks like they photographed it on a wood floor....each plank is roughly 2 1/4 inches wide (standard for old pine/oak flooring). I count roughly 8 planks across...18"??? If that's correct...WOW!

Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
