Once again thank you for wealth of information you offer here. Just picked up this temple jar? Pretty sure it's 19c ko-kutani. Over glaze painted/enamel. Tried to find the mark on gothberg, close but no luck. It's 15"H x 9"W base 4 3/4"W. Though it has damage (old repair) the quality seems to me to be very good and I could not pass on the price. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

I agree. I almost titled this kutani or satsuma. The only comparable I could find which only had the leaf decoration said it was ko-kutani? The mark which is hard to read is close to either. Got me stump. And that's why I'am here. You folks are the best.

Hello watership. Don't I wish this was 17c/18c. During my research I read that ko-kutani was made during the 16c 17c and early 18c. Around 1820 the kilns were destroyed and not rebuilt until the early 19c. I assumed this was 19c possible later. I was afraid that's what you folks were going to tell me if kutani at all.

Sorry for the delay. Life a beach but always try to make the best of it! Thank you Todd for the satsuma reference, spot on. The mark is possibly Hodada/Hotada. Sent some pics to a couple of auction houses, see what they have to say. I'll let you know. Once again thank you for the wealth of knowledge you folks offer on this site!

Ko-Kutani, you have not.
A lovely piece of Satsuma-yaki, you do indeed - and a beautiful example..
Disregard the damage; it is of little consequence imo, the enamel work is superb - and could match the style of Taizan Yohei IX; the impressed mark (although usually a two character in the examples I've seen) seems to possibly read such from a glance on the left, although not clear enough to be certain at the moment..
You will notice this shares some similarities with his more Kacho stylized pieces along with being Kyo-based earthenware, but this one, a unique one for sure if impressed by him.
A gentleman in Florida just shared with me a piece of his by Taizan with strong and prominent relief work, which I shared to my friend who was working with a collector of Taizan for over 40 years - many, many pieces.
He had never seen such a piece; and due to the lack of the impressed mark - having a rectangular red export form instead of a later style, it was indeed a strange mixture that left even the collector awestruck and mesmerized, as the studio would have closed before then by quite some time: implying his later works were just as much of high quality..
I recommend you research this, and seek out more examples: his pieces being such high quality, are well documented - he won prizes at many exhibitions and world fairs during the reign of Meiji, and worked with many other regarded painters and potters; and drew inspiration from many unique sources..
He was at one point partners with Kinkozan in exporting.
Some great works were made by them together; and it shows how much interaction there were between these men and all of their kilns/studios during a time of considerable change in their country, art, and industry.
