So I thought this would be a cool opportunity to see the construction method, and technique involved in making one of these... I bought a cleanly broken but repaired long ago, Chinese imari baluster vase, quite big still at 26cm or 10.25 inches. After soaking to remove the glue and plaster/cement which they had coated it with, you can see the wonderful pulling and turnings inside it. Also I had always assumed the neck was luted on, but it is apparent that they created the body and then narrowed the neck after the fact.
Anyways thought some of you all would enjoy seeing it. I am pretty sure it is Kangxi/yongzheng, and very well decorated, I definitely love the "bonsai" on the side. Ultimately it will get a sterling mount for the neck.

That's a handsome vase! I love Chinese amari and, in fact, my Christmas cupcakes are displayed under glass sitting on a similar Kangxi/Yongzhen patterend plate. (Sadly, my partner doesn't like amari; well, you can't have evrything in a mate.)
You were brave to take that project on; were there very many pieces?

Thanks and yeah I love the Chinese Imari too. I always try and use them and people are always on me about being careful with this stuff, I am always having to remind them, that was why it was exported in the first place. Plus lets be honest some of those export gravy/sauce boats hold like half a gallon of gravy.... Just sayin.
Only three pieces, I thought two, but there was another little chunk when the glue came off.... not a big deal, especially on older pieces, where the glue is natural for the most part. Soak in warm water for a few days, or longer, and then a few dishwasher tablet and warm water for another few days, then plain water for a few more. I then tape everything back together with celo tape or masking tape (the original tan one is the best for this, not that blue or green stuff), get the pieces as tight as possible, and then once I am sure they are aligned i glue along the cracks after warming them up a bit in the oven, proof setting usually works. The glue I use is Hxtal nyl-1 but cyanoacrylate is super effective too and you don't need to warm the piece first, plus it doesn't take two weeks to dry. This ones probably getting kept, so I may not tinker with it too much other than the glue up and a silver rim, working on basic silversmithing so that will be an interesting project.
Btw, I just realized I still have that cup sitting in a box here for you by my front door, I'll try and get that out when I get back Monday. I send out a bunch of mail during the week for work but my personal mail always gets forgotten....

Thanks Mark, that makes sense, definitely more of a Yongzheng foot and the way the shading is done in red too. The only reason I'd lean towards late Kangxi is the way the flowers and branches are painted.
