I recently bought this jar from an auction in Sweden, it was listed as Korean. I was wondering if anyone could shed a little bit more light on if it is indeed Korean and how old it is? It is 26cm in height. Most of the decoration is underglaze red, but there is some underglaze blue in some of the flowers, but it is very faint. The motive seems to be the "Three friends of winter". Thanks!

Hi!
I had seen that vase at auction too. I think it is later Joseon Dynasty, 18th Century. The style and design are korean, like the rather slim lotus leafs on the upper part of the vase as these owl like looking things at the lower part.
Greetings
with Best Regards...
Carsten
The only other example I've been able to find so far, is on liveauctioneers (mine is better decorated).

I joined a group about Korean art on facebook, just to get this checked, and so far no one believes this to be Korean, the only other suggestion was Chinese. @detuned , how sure are you about this being Korean? It would help to find some references from more trustworthy sources than liveauctioneers, but so far no luck. I can kinda see why someone would say Chinese, the Three Friends of Winter seems to be a pretty common Chinese theme on ceramics, but I have never seen a Chinese jar made this way, with these kind of handles, therefore I doubt very much that that would be the case (unless it is some kind of minyao ware from a very limited area or something similar).
Whatever the case, I still like it and find it rather attractive, but I also like to know exactly what I've added to my collection 😀

@iluvatar I only piece together what I see. The Lotus Leafes are a strong indicator, also the Base with typical discoloration. Something you see a lot on korean vases of the Joseon Dynasty. Rather rare is the clean cut glaze and the foot.
And those owl shaped looking Lotus things on the bottom I have seen before on a blue glazed Korean vase, but I have no reference right now...

@iluvatar Since I have nothing else to do, I dove deeper into your korean vase...
and it might be a placenta jar 🤔
From the National Museum of Korea:
Called a taehangari, taeho or taehang in Korean, this white porcelain placenta jar is a type of vessel used to enshrine the placenta of royal offspring after their birth. In Korea, the placenta was believed to be a symbol of the life force of the fetus and thus kept it in a specially-arranged place. The placenta of a royal baby was especially highly regarded as it was believed to be directly related to the destiny of the nation.
Maybe the "Three Friends of Winter" Theme with it's ideas of steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience are symbolic for the offspring.🤓

It could be. I looked through their collection of jars earlier, and also made a search for "red", but did not find anything I would call similar, but I did see some decoration similarities, but nothing I would call a definite. A few pieces with the same kind of "handles" or "lugs" would certainly make for a stronger argument, but no luck (no pun intended!) there either. I also think it must be Korean, I would just feel better about calling it that, if I can find a comp somewhere in a legit collection. I will keep looking! 😀 The help is appreciated, thank you! 🙂

Wow, someone just suggested it was Japanese from the 1920-30s (in the Korean art facebook group). I don't see it, honestly.
I wrote the Korean National Museum earlier today, hope they might be able to shed some light on it.
