I always have trouble telling the difference between 18th 19th and 20th century Imari. In the mix is the japanese Imari from 1950. If anyone knows of a way to easily and quickly identify the age of these japanese Imari items it would be great to learn the technique.
Here is a vase for sale and I am interested in it but the shape seems odd for a start, and the base is also odd. There is a backmark which again is not good as they usually are not marked and then the base is odd. These are all the pictures i have. It does look good to me but it also doesn't look right but not sure why.
Is it 19th C if you were to guess?
These are all the pictures i got, and there is only that one picture of the base do you have to use your imagination to estimate the shape of the base.
In fact i have a vase similar to this, and my vase has a Fukagawa mark, so i am guessing the blue mark on the above vase maybe some form of a fukagawa mark.
Here is my Vase, that I have at home presently. It is late so excuse the dark pictures.
Hi SD,
I agree with you. The vase is a very odd shape
I do not believe it is a genuine Fukagawa vase for three reasons.
Firstly the overall painting skill/style is very sloppy. Secondly the blue marks on the base are very blotchy and difficult to decipher, hence the somewhat blue looking blob trying to be a blue orchid. Thirdly the significant loss at the base is a major concern.
I do not believe this is a 19th century example but much later one probably made in the second half of the 20th century.
This is just my opinion SD. I may of course be totally wrong but I have spent the last ten minutes looking at it and it all looks very wrong.
Your vase is a nice example of late Meiji period. If you compare the quality of painting, you should quickly see the difference.
Dating Fukagawa is not a simple task. Quite often one style/theme of base marking shifted over into the next thereby mudding the waters. You often see mid to late 20th century wares being offered as antiques!
Mark
Hi Mark,
For me, The suspect Vase is not 19thC due to the fact it has very ornate (western style slightly) and rather stiff designs, and yet the orange flowers are not delicate and done with care. There is less of an effort to use contrast.
However for the life of me, I have not way of knowing if that Vase is a Meiji Fukagawa like mine or a 1950's. It is that hard to tell. I would lean towards it being a very good example of a Meiji era, and in fact it has merit.
The frightening thing about Japanese Fukagawa, and in this one specific example it is being able to decipher this style and design as Meiji and not say 1950.
There is a massive difference as an investment to find your item is 1950 and not Meiji.
I think that Vase in the first post sold for £25. So it did not sell as a Fukagawa.
In retrospect, they are not so different. I think my vase is possibly just a very nice one. It is also quite big. I am 50/50 whether this Vase is Meiji. Just based on the design, other than the slightly western ornate, i would say it is Meiji but without a clear picture of the base it is impossible to sure.
I would be surprised if they painted the suspect vase this good in 1950 unless they deliberately were trying to sell it as Meiji.
By Ornate, I mean the obvious western style you can see around the base of the suspect vase. I call it suspect just to be clear on what I am discussing. On my vase it is simply designed with only traditional images. This was why i was reluctant on that vase, the color and design on the suspect vase is ok for Meiji. If it is indeed 1950 then it will be very very hard to ever tell a genuine one.
In summary thank you for all your time and effort you put into this Mark.

Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
