When enlarged it reminds me of a Grocho Marx mask, but maybe it is supposed to be a stylized owl, just does not look like script to me.
I have been told this could be a production identification code. Etc number

thanks. I can't upload any decent pictures because I'm picking it up next week. But here are some poor quality photos. Quite a busy vase, lots going on. It's the koi dragon myth, with pheonix and deer. Not sure why deer? anyway it looks pretty old, but I can't find the exact style. It looks older than Meiji to me, looks like lots of rust spots and ware. Any ideas?
This vase looks to have extremely high quality painting. This was not an export piece in my opinion but for someone important. I’m alway a little nervous when it’s this nice. Better pictures will help. If you haven’t paid for it yet maybe get Peter opinion.

No doubt you have seen these in your search and i have seen similar pair also described as Seto.

How tall is it, looks like it might be a tall floor vase.

The mark is in the typical position that a pottery makers leaves it. In fact some with a little more knowledge could deduce a little bit more just by the position of the mark. The position offset from centre near the base rim is the location of the makers mark and indicates that this is the mark from the studio artist or factory that made it.
I know the placement is fine, it was just an additional suggestion.
