I am wondering if the wooden frame will be a mystery to the forum, or if someone will know immediately, what it is. It is certainly a mystery to me. Is that some type of animal skin inside? Why frame it so carefully? Maybe someone can enlighten me...
The metal bowl seems like good quality. Not sure about age or material.

That framed item is bizarre!
Not sure if it's a skin or not. The quality of the picture is too low to see properly. However in the larger picture it looks like a fabric by the way of the criss-cross stitches. If you have a loupe then you should be able to determine either way!
Very oddly framed imo. On the reverse seems to have a center that opens or widens. There is also some type of stamped calligraphy that may hold the clue to its origin/other. Perhaps gfhandle aka George and or others may be able to translate. It appears on the surface to have some age. Perhaps WW2 or earlier?
The bowl certainly has a Japanese feel to it. Not sure what the material is? There appears to be some flaking in one your pictures. If this is correct then it would most certainly be a base metal that has been either silver plated or rhodium plated. I am of the opinion that it is probably modern.

Looks like a picture frame with a background but with the picture missing.

I think Birgit may be correct about the framed item. In the early 20th century they used to use a type of felt as a backing for photographs. Often a type of royal blue if my memory serves me correctly.
The state and dirty colour really threw me. 🤣

What stands out to me regarding the frame is the hinged back with two twist braces. This suggests that it was meant to be opened partially? Also the lack of stand or hanging loop makes me think it is not a picture frame.
I have seen frame-type oddities that we’re used in emerging photography and even science equipment. The two U shaped groves also suggest it was intended to fit into something?
My guess is that this is part of something bigger? A photography slide?

Wow, you’re the man, Nic. Definitely the same thing, although manufactured in a different country. Very cool. I was a bit curious over the complexity of a picture frame, but photography hadn’t occurred to me.
Mark, the bowl has a lot of ware, especially on the back, and those areas are silvery.

Hi Todd,
After a little bit of research I think I have found the origin of the mark.
It could either be one of the following two,
1. Schweizer silver Corp (1950's-1960's). However this company mainly dealt with sterling silver. Commonly used a similar mark to yours.
2. Spaulding of Mansfield, MA (1896-1922). This mark was used on silver plate. I think in all probability this is the correct one.

Hi Mark,
I was thinking it was Japanese. It was in Japan until recently, that is the extent of the provenance. I’ve seen plenty of modern ones of this style in the Japanese shops. They are much lighter and poorer quality. You could be right about it being American, I am no expert, but I’m not sure.
