I've been following a post on Gotheborg's site about Chinese plates with the theme of the Great Wall.  While looking at my Japanese pieces I found this small dish about 12.5 CM. And I realized this may be just what they were discussing. Is it possible this dish IS Chinese, Or just a Japanese copy? It is NOT a white white but I think the painting is fine. It looks like a Chia-Ching mark, I thought to be false.What do you think?

I believe it is made on Japan and not Chinese.

The outer blue circle on the base was used primarily on japanese porcelain and rarely seen on chinese porcelain.

This in addition to the style indicates to me that it is Japanese porcelain.

@imperialfinegems,

I forgot to show a side view.  There are two lines on the outside of the foot and one on the inside.

@imperialfinegems,

Were you referring the blue line inside the foot?

Dear mark,

I see what you mean.  I've looked and seen several Japanese pieces like this.  That's a great tip! Thanks!!

By the way,  I believe you are from Florida and I've heard there is a Japanese "museum" somewhere in central Florida -privately run.  Do you know anything about that?

@musicnus Better ask Tim/Greeno about Florida, unless Mark has relocated, he is in Australia.  I seem to remember a recent thread where there was a Chinese outlier with a blue circle next to the rim, but that is generally an indication of Japanese 99% of the time.

@greeno107 must be out of pocket on a buying trip. I have been to the Ringling Museum a few times in Sarasota, but in truth, at that time, I was most interested in the large Rubens religious paintings. Google mentions a Japanese Garden and Museum at Delray Beach and a museum at St. Petersburg, when Tim returns, he may know exactly the one. Also, he can post any new scores he has found on his travels to delight us.

@sharonp @musicnus

Sorry… I was out and about, but now home preparing for the impending storm.

YES! The Morikami museum is truly a cultural relic in South Florida. Such a fantastic place to visit while the kids wait in line all day at Disney.

@sharonp Amen!

I'm an outdoors person and I've lived in Florida since 1990, so adversity surrounding storms like this is nothing new to me.  Still, it's been an incredible run without a hurricaine of any significant strength for the past 6 years.  This one looks bad.

Something nobody suggests that has worked great for me is to buy a brand new 55 gallon trash barrel with a cover, and fill it with water (potable), then tape the lid on.

The "fill the bathtub" idea is not sanitary for drinking purposes, and it can't be covered to prevent dirt/dust from getting into the water to fowl it.

Buying bottled water is expensive and stores usually run out quick.

In 2006 (I think) when South Florida got hammered with 3 hurricaines, I filled 4 - 55 gallon barrels.  We were without power and water in West Palm Beach for 2 weeks.  I had more than enough for drinking/cooking, and even to fill the toilet tank.  In fact, we lived near the Palm Beach Zoo, so we donated 2 containers of water to the animals and staff.

@greeno107 - That's the one I remember.  It seemed at one time they were asking for Japanese Porcelain.  However, it doesn't it has much of a catalog.

@musicnus The exhibit area for objects is rather small, but I think they actually have a fairly respectable collection (not always on view) that they rotate throughout the year.

Essentially, the Morikami is an authentic Japanese garden and living pavilion that was built during the early 20th c. when Japanese immigrants came to Florida to try and grow rice (I don't think that worked out).  If memory serves me correctly, during WWII, Japanese internment forced the remaining owners out, although the history on the website does not explicitly say that.

Not sure of the ownership now, but the Museum/Park is funded by the surrounding wealthy community of Boca Raton, who not only put a lot of money in maintaining the incredible botanical garden and koi ponds, but the authentic structures which throughout the year are open for viewing, along with opportunities to celebrate various Japanese holidays in a very realistic manner.

I'm not sure anywhere in the world, other than Japan, that has such a large and authentic Japanese setting.
