Back from a raucous super-spreader event. Everyone wore masks, but the distancing was non existent. Am trying to decide if I should continue going to these.
Not sure exactly what to call this. For the tea ceremony or a flower bin? Has a nice patina. Meiji? Is quite large and heavy. Actually cost me $50, haggled down a bit. Its almost more than I ever pay, but I couldn’t resist. Originally $100 on the scale (pay by kilo). Quality seems nice, I like how the feet are incorporated into the design.

Hi Todd,
Looks very Japanese. I think it's probably late Meiji. Perhaps taoshi but not later imo. It's a jardinare or flower base/bed I think.
Nicely done and only $50. Bargain!
I like it.
Mark
Hi Todd,
Looks to be a very nice quality item. Have you tested with a magnet looks like cast iron in the photo's. That could be a makers mon or mark in that square on the base can't quite see from your photo. Agree with Mark from Japan. As it has plants and rustic looking tree branches plus birds for decoration could it be a trough for Bonsai ? Might be more than you normally pay but think you negotiated a good deal. What are the dimensions ?
Good luck with the virus it is hard to decide whether to stay home or go out.
Michael
I like that Todd, I think Michael might be right with the bonsai idea. It would certainly look lovely with plants in.
Hi Michael,
I know why you think it's possible iron. By the inside.
However I think that's residue from sand or other. I have a large jardinare with similar residue. Not sure what it is. Always thought it was left over residue from incense in fine white sand. The type you find at temples etc. Also remember the white sand in those hotel lobby for smokers.
Maybe I am wrong! Just a thought.
Mark
Hi Mark, Michael, Julia,
Thanks for all the remarks. The dimensions are 17” x 10.5” x 5”. Bonsai does seem like an ideal and likely scenario to me too. Hadn’t thought of that. Now I need to buy a bonsai or two 😋 .
I think the mark is pseudo Chinese. See pic below. I don’t know the meaning of the mark. Agree the piece is almost surely Japanese.
I do think its bronze by the patina and look. I am including a close-up of one of the feet that has some wear revealing the metal. Maybe this will be helpful to someone more experienced than myself.
Thanks!

Hi Todd,
As suggested by Michael. Have you tried a magnet. If it's iron it will stick to it. Bronze will not.
It's hard to tell from your pictures. The first lots look like bronze.
Mark
Hi Mark,
I wasn’t sure I had a magnet, believe it or not. So, after searching for ten minutes, it occurred to me...the fridge. I have some silly thing stuck to the front of it, must be a magnet. 😋 And it was.
The magnet has no attraction to the bonsai bin. Sorry for not answering your magnet question the 1st time around, Michael. Excellent advice.

Hi Todd,
Then it's not iron.
If you take a piece of metal and scratch it in a safe inconspicuous spot and the residue/scratched area is a yellowish colour then it's bronze.
Mark
Ah yes, it is yellowish. Was already scratched on one of the feet. Bronze it is, then.

Hello Todd,
Think I can see great Nippon or Japan in that mark on the left side. Perhaps George will be able to tell us more if he has a look. The fact they decorated the underside in some detail which would not be seen when in use , points to good quality and maker. Looks like dragons underneath to me.
Michael
Hi Todd and Michael,
On the right hand side it says. Great nippon great japan. As it reads right to left its highly probable to be Meiji period. That is all I can read.
I suspect that the remainder part includes the makers name. I do hope George aka gfhandle visits with his thoughts.
It's a great piece of bronze. I hope it's by a known maker.
Yes I agree they look like two dragons on the base.
Mark
Ha Ha yes great Japan on the right not left silly me
Michael
Todd,
They call these objects Sunabachi Ikebana Suiban Usubata, might help with research if you use these terms in your searching.
Michael
Thanks so much, guys. That information is helpful.
I guess they are dragons. One has legs and feet, the other seems not to. Not sure what that means...
