It's a fascinating book on various woodblock images.Â
I do hope someone on the forum can enlighten us all a bit more.Â

I’ve read that wood cut prints were popular as souvenirs with Japanese tourists in the 19th century. Precursors of our postcards and coffee table books. You could google for Hiroshige or Hokusai.Â
Birgit
Apparently, its this set, by Utagawa Hiroshige in book form. 1st edition rather than 2nd. So what exactly do I have here? 🤔Â

I didn’t mean to say this is an actual 1st edition, just according to the wiki page it contains the print listed as in the 1st. I assume this is a later copy. How much later, I guess is the question. I found information that says there were many editions, the quality of which got worse and worse as time went on. So, I have some work to do, when it comes to establishing a reliable date.Â

This postcard just fell out of the book from behind one of the prints 😋Â
Â
So....the prints are better than a few I compared them to on Ebay, but not nearly as good as the one’s in the Met’s collection. So, they are somewhere in that in-between space consisting of 185 years.Â

Hi Todd,
Hiroshige made that journey between 1833 and 1834 it took two weeks. The original prints were made on quite flimsy and cheap paper. Are the prints in your book printed on the pages or are separate and you can lift them up from the page. Original prints or first editions can bring very high prices.
Here's a Japanese museums guide to help decide old or more recent print.

If you google Hiroshige 53 stations book. You will come up with a long list of books hope you find yours.
Michael
Hi Michael,
Thanks for the link, I’ll take a look.
The prints are on the pages, but each print is blank of the back and attached(glued?) to the back of another print on the edges. In this way, all the prints could be separated and framed, I suppose. I haven’t been able to find the book online, as of yet. I was wondering if this page might contain the date of the book...

Todd, what a great postcard, too. I wonder if the date on that gives any clue as to the date of your edition?Â
Possibly not, it may just be part of a wider collection, but such a nice additional find.
Hi Julia,
Yes, I like the postcard too. Quite a funny scene to me. Seems to be in a similar style as Hiroshige. I don’t know if it is his work. The postcard apparently dates from 1918-1933. It does have a postmark on it, but not sure how to read that. If the book is from the same time period, that would be nice. No guarantee, as you say.
As for the painting of the sitting man, it seems that is supposed to be Hiroshige himself. Although I can’t say that for sure. It does have a date of 1858, but that is the date of the original painting/drawing of the sitting man, and unrelated to the date of printing for the book.
