Hello All,
Have had this dish for quite awhile. Never been sure if it is from one of the Arita Kilns or possibly Seto. It has a few kiln faults Seto wares are normally free of such blemishes but it is quite finely painted painted and I do have a bowl which is clearly marked Seto and the painting of the grass is very similar . As you can see the back is modeled as a natural shell. Would like to know members opinion as to Kiln origin and if they think the dish is O.K. for Meiji era. Suspect that it would have been part of a set of 5. Not sure why would have birds on a sea food dish maybe the others in the set had different food types. Also would like to know if this is an export item or for local use. I is 20.5 x 15.5 x 9
cm
Cheers
Michael
Hi Michael,
The decoration-style has a look of Seto, so I was just looking to see if anything came up. Nothing specifically Seto (although it appears they did make shell-shaped dishes), but I found this:
It doesn't help greatly with the kiln, but it is something.

Hi Michael,
Wonderful little dish. I love things like this. I know Hirado made shell dishes, that is the 1st thing that I think of, but this isn‘t one of those I guess. Wow, Julia found an exact match, nicely done. (Not literally exact, each is a handmade original of course). I’ve never seen one of these in person, but painting and colors look like they could be Meiji to me. Agree, the birds are an odd choice on a shell.
A few days ago, someone posted a Japanese shell-shaped dish...no real relation to this one, other than the shell theme. And yesterday I picked up a damaged shell-shaped dish, also no real relation to either. And now this today. They say they come in threes...
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Julia that ebay item is my dish. That's what comes of doing two things at once I was posting on Facebook group about an Australian pottery item now I have on the FB page recent purchase and here had for some time should of been the other way around. Still would like members opinion on my recent purchase .. silly me
Thanks Todd I did once see a set of 5 of these on a well know dealers site at very high price it was claimed they were Edo and from memory they looked to be better quality than mine especially the painting of the rim that runs around the top edge.
Yours embarrassingly
Michael
🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 That is so funny!
I still think the style is like that of Seto. I had a beautiful tile decorated with similar birds and grasses, only the colour was a typical Seto blue so I was quite certain about it. This has a look but I am not sure. It might help date it though, if this was a popular style at a certain time; I believed my tile was Meiji and sold it as such.
Hi Michael,
Agree with Julia's post. Although not my area.
In my opinion it dates to the late Edo, early Meiji period. It's not for export but local consumption imo. Almost all export wares are marked.
Nice piece. Very interesting and unusual design. I can see why you bought it.
Mark
Mark,
I thought we had discussed this shape in the forum before maybe it was somewhere else I do get things and places mixed up sometimes. It seems the shape was very popular in Japan it seems most of the kiln areas made a version a few photo's below. The reason I bought it was because I like Japanese blue and white, I also like daily use items.
Julia
The painting maybe quite good for an item that was never intended for a cabinet but more for the table but I am not sure the ceramic is up to Seto quality.
Now I know that they were made all over Japan might have to keep an eye out for them.
Yes, I am not sure because the quality may not be there. I edited that out earlier in case it sounded rude. 😊
Some nice examples you have posted, there.
Hi All,
I found another Awabi dish at a very reasonable price. They say if you have three of something you have a collection. So I have one more to go. This one I think is O.K. for Meiji / Taisho due to the lack of wear especially to the gold and the lack of prominent spur marks. Plus the blue and white painting is a little sketchy.
It has a nice Akaji Kinrande border, the 3 friends and geometric textile pattern. With the back decorated with aquatic creatures and plants. There are a lot of this type of dish currently on offer most claim an Edo date don't think this one would qualify for that vintage but for the price I paid I am happy. Have to now decide if it is Arita or other, could be Daishoji but i guess that's something that could be debated for along time without resolve.
Michael
