Hi, I recently bought this jade camel that was sold at auction as "antique". Thankfully I did not pay a great deal for it, but I would appreciate any insight anyone can offer as to age, etc. It does have some light wear pattern on the feet. 5.5"w x 4"H x 2"D. Thanks very much! JL

Firstly judging by your pictures only I would concur with you that it certainly looks like nephrite jade. The russet inclusions also look natural. That in itself is a big hurdle to cross. Most are made from serpentine or other.
As to age it is dfficult to ascertain. From looking at a couple of my reference books namely jade by Roger keverne and Chinese jade from Neolithic to Qing by Jessica Rawson I think your camel is carved or at least based on a Ming dynasty example. I saw nothing in these two books that accurately matched your item. Especially the carving or depiction of the camels head. Unfortunately there were only a few examples that I could see. I also briefly looked at the major auction houses results etc.
Determining the period or age of any jade carved animal is difficult at the best of times especially from images and not by sight or preferably hand touch etc. Also jade animals and their period is not my strongest point.
Your example appears at least from my perspective to be probably from the 20th century. Whether it's from earlier or later part of that period I am unable to confirm. I am unable to visually see any modern drill residue or marks which would mean your figure was made prior to the 1950's. However it does have a high polish finish which if done professionally can in some instances remove or hinder the sight of modern drills. I am also unable to visually see any signs of natural wear. Which is in my opinion problematic and points to a later date.
If I may ask you. What area do you live in. I may be able to point you in a direction of a number of dealers I know who are expert jade dealers.

Thank you J-Lewis. There is dealer named Sam Bernstein from Bernstein Oriental and jade art. He was up to very recently operating out of a landmark premises in San Francisco. His knowledge on jade and in particular jade animals is in my opinion second to none! He has over the years published a number of books dedicated to jade.
He may offer you a opinion as to its authenticity and age. However he does this as a business and not a hobby or other. Therefore he may charge a modest sum etc.
You could if so inclined mention both this site and my name to him. I do know him by way of emails and his web site. Sadly I do not live in the states. I live in Australia. Otherwise I would definetly know him if I lived there. He is by all accounts one of the most trusted dealers/appraisers and from what I've gathered thus so far a really nice guy.
