Hi all,
This is my first post- I recently purchased a costume jewellery job lot in a UK auction for £35 and this unmarked brooch was in it.
I'd be interested to know if it's something to be excited about or if it's simply a modern tourist item?
I've identified the metal as white gold, and it measures 2 inches in length and weighs a total of 15 grams.
I've included a backlit photo so you can see the internal structure.
Cheers.
Hi Tony,
Welcome to this great forum for Asian Art! I can't help but think I've upvoted this on reddit, but I can't find it anymore. Might be going crazy.
I can't add anything as to the material (which I think is jadeite) or the age, but I think it is a beautiful carving. Looking forward to seeing what the forum's jade experts have to say about it!
Kindly,
John
@bartholin since it is carved on both sides that is a good sign, as is the old t shape hinge but it has a modern safety clasp instead of the old c clasp, but someone could have taken it to a jeweler for a modern safety clasp. It is a nice color and I'm sure Mark will be able to tell you how to test whether or not it has been enhanced. Lovely in any case, excellent purchase.
Hi Tony - and welcome to this great forum ...
Not really my area but I’am pretty sure Mark@imperialfinegems will be able help you with this ...
Stuart
@Tony Brams,
Firstly welcome to this great forum.
Your brooch is highly probable to be jadeite jade. It's not on my opinion based on your images to be glass. Apple Green with infusion of lavender. It appears to be semi-translucent.
Jadeite jade has various degrees of quality ranging from highly translucent (hotly sought-after) to opague. The most sought-after colour is known as imperial green.
One very simple test to determine if it's possible dyed. Place it on a glass of water overnight. If the water changes colour it's dyed.
In order to determine if it's genuine grade A jadeite and whether it's been enhanced you would need to visit a gemologist (not a jeweler unless he is qualified). If you need further assistance let me know. Another is using a UV light. Natural jadeite will not reflect. Whereas treated will in most cases display highlighted areas.
Since the metal is gold it's highly probable to be untreated but not guaranteed.
It's a modern carving as in 2nd half of the 20th century. Burmese in origin.
A very nice find.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Many thanks Mark, I really appreciate your input. I was hoping it might be older but I'm still happy with the find.
If it does test as untreated what would be the value of such a brooch? In other words would it be worth the cost for me to have it professionally lab tested?
Hi Tony,
Difficult to determine value by pictures. However would be definitely worth having it professionally appraised imo. They should be able to perform preliminary test to determine if it's dyed/genuine. Then proceed accordingly.
Very difficult to tell the age of the carving. It's just my estimation based on your images.
Value widely spreads depending on translucency and colour. The later can be a little tricked by exposure of lens etc.
Very popular atm with enthusiasts.
Let us know how you go. 😁
Sorry I couldn't provide you with a more detailed/definitive answer at the moment.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Mark, I'd love to see a few recent examples of Jadeit sales results of high quality pieces if you know of any you can share. Especially of the green color.
Hi Johnshoe,
There are many examples from bonhams, sotheby's and christies. Simply type in 'jadeite jade'.
The higher the quality the higher the estimate etc.
I will send you a jade chart showing the degrees of green.
It's important to note that the images below are translucent to highly translucent and green to intense green.
@imperialfinegems Wow Mark, those are beautiful. You'd almost think they're emerald cabochons. Is that "imperial green" jade? Also, I've been checking your friend's website you recommended a couple of weeks ago, jadeitejade.com, but it looks like it's still undergoing maintenance, unfortunately.
Kindly,
John
@imperialfinegems Just had fun cruising old Sothebys jadeite sales. Holy smokes! I had no idea bead necklaces could go for 10 million usd.
@imperialfinegems Hi Mark,
I've had a look through some auction results on the Christies website, and there are some that are very peculiar, for example these pendants don't appear to be made from very high quality jadeite, and yet they both sold for more than 10 times their auction estimate:
https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-5564125
I'd be very curious to hear your opinions on these results.
Cheers.
Hi Tony,
The sale of these two jadeite pieces really was at the height of the jade market at the time.
I think if they reappeared today they would struggle. Obviously at the time two or more people really wanted them. It happens all the time.
Personally I think they are worth the estimate and not much more. The quality is good but not great.
Did you put your pendant in a glass of water overnight?
Mark
