This piece was bequeathed to me. I presume it is ivory. I welcome any observation re age, quality, country of origin, whether it depicts an iconic or random scene. I know I cannot sell it? Is it legal to give it to a museum (if you think its quality is ‘good enough’). Thank you all! I have several pix; unfamiliar w uploading so apologies for clunkiness
Laura
Hi Laura,
Your shoe horn is Chinese in origin. It has a probable date of republican period (1912-1949). It may also date a bit later. Too difficult to determine from the pictures. Typically a canton export type ware popular during the early 20th century and later.
The colour being a creamy white is consistent with ivory. There should be no poros marks/spots that appear /associated with bone.
There should be either cross-hatched or circular lines. Bone and ivory often display straight lines. The former with poros pit marks associated with calcium deposits. A hot pin test should quickly eliminate whether it's resin.
Resin will display pit marks, holes or grooves. Often with the sealing or joinery leaving a cast line. You may need to use a loupe etc.
The quality of your pictures are too low for me to determine if it is ivory, bone or resin.
All ivory will fluorescence under a UV light and appear a bluish-white. Bone and shell will display a similar colour. Vegetable ivory a slightly orange or warmer in tone. Plastic and resin will appear a dull blue.
It is technically illegal to export ivory. However, as far as I am aware you can still sell said within your county. You would have to double check. Where I reside in Australia one can still freely trade ivory within the countries borders etc. I still see ivory being sold on ebay in the USA today, although they have banned it from sale. Sellers using exotic titles etc.
I dont think a museum would have interest but you could ask if you are so inclined. These types of novelty export items are fairly common.

thank you for your very helpful reply. Thanks to you, not only will i not embarrass a museum curator by offering something fairly recent and less than unusual, but I will now not hesitate to use it! Yay you!
I would be careful using this because it appears to have a small crack at one end.
If I owned it, I would perhaps use it for display purposes as opposed to actually using it. It has a rather appealing design to my eye. Not expensive in my opinion but certainly collectable. I used to back in the 1980'S collect a lot of ivory figures, netzukes and other.
Finally if you are going to use it please be gentle as these can easily break. As I have already posted it is more of a curiosity piece rather than practical. Just my thoughts etc.
Mark

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
