I couldn't ID the seal. Looks like high quality work to me, but I don't know much about republican work, so hopefully Mark and others can have a look. It's pretty beat up, but might be worth the drive if it is by one of the eight friends, etc. Looking forward to hearing others thoughts. Cheers! John
Did you buy this? If you did great find. I’m thinking it’s legit get driving. Lol
Hi Johnshoe,
It's definitely republican period.
It's in the style of Wang Qi who was a famous member of the eight friends of zushan.
Unfortunately it's not by him. Just in the style and manner of. The quality of work is imo average.
I dont recognize the mark.
Unfortunately, the condition is not great and would impact the pricing.
Mark
@johnshoe For some strange reason, collectors of Qianjiang porcelains are more forgiving than traditional collectors as I’ve seen some broken pieces achieve extraordinary sales results- the damage was visible and the bidding as widespread, so this was by no accident.
Maybe this is true because of the scholarly focus on the painting, rather than the porcelain itself. Not really sure.
So, do some research on the artist - there are other important artists besides Wang Qi.
Koh Antiques is the best resource I’ve been able to find. I have no relationship with the dealer who runs the web sight, but I believe they sell on EBay.

Based on the rendering, your example is early, 1880’s I’d guess. Post a clear shot of the calligraphy as it likely has a date from the stem- branch calendar as well as a signature.
@imperialfinegems Is the new photo from when you were in Hong Kong as a jeweler? Back story please. Sharon
P.S. Thanks for all you do for the forum, can't be said too often. Sharon
@imperialfinegems Mark, I’m a bit jealous of your youthful good looks!
You’ve inspired me! So, I’ve finally decided to upload a photo of myself in my typical ‘at home’ posture - enjoy!
I think my left side is more endearing.
Hi Sharon,
Thank you for noticing my new image or should I say an old one. I was actually trying to change the original image to a front facing dragon. But for some reason I can't do that with my phone. It keeps bouncing back and forth with either this image or my original one from when I first joined this forum. I may have to use a desktop computer. Or simply leave it as it is.
The image was taken back in 1983 when I had my shop in Russell St Melbourne. The store was named 'central loan company'. It was at the time one of the largest pawn brokers stores in Melbourne. I was 23 years old when the image was taken.
I bought the shop in 1981 with the help from my parents. I had a partner Alan Sward.
It was a unreal experience at the time. The amount of diamonds, gold, antiques that flowed through was astonishing! I never thought for a moment that this would ever end.
The photo was taken at the time for a article that was going to be published in the herald-sun. I appeared in numerous publications on the workings of the industry over the next decade or so.
During that time I obtained a degree in gemology. I had towards the end of the 90's a substantial collection of jades, diamonds, rare gold coins, vintage cars and four houses.
I had during my hayday a total of three stores scattered throughout Melbourne.
Little did I know at the the time that my world would come crashing down. To the point of losing everything!
Without going into to much detail the time between 2001 through to 2012 was a very dark period for me.
It's only since joining this forum did I start to get an appreciation for porcelain and bronzes etc. I consider this group as friends. I have had been blessed to know a number of you.
@johnshoe and @Greeno107
It's possibly from the 1880's. It could also highly probable to be late guangxu period 1875-1908 through to early republic period. It's difficult to determine by way of the poor images. I believe somewhere within the calligraphy there should be a poem of sorts and highly probable to contain a date and possibly a name.
Its definitely recommended to obtain a description of the calligraphy and read mark.
As you already know there were thousands of artists at the time. The work on the vase is nice. But it's average in my eyes.
There are a few members here that are very proficient in understanding the calligraphy if they care to share with us.
Chinese buyers are very fussy with porcelain. Rarely do they buy damaged porcelain. Unless of course it's by a famous artist or its of imperial quality.
In friendship,
Mark
@imperialfinegems Your life experience is remarkable! No wonder you have such a wide range and depth of knowledge!
BTW, my avatar photo is of my pet piggie, Moonpie. She asked that I clarify that with the members of the forum, and to stop taking credit for her good looks!
@greeno107 Moonpie needs a Yoohoo, very Southern name, cute.
