Hi, all. I bought eBay item 183333673184 from a reliable seller that has been regularly recommended here. After I closely examine it I think it is a modern copy similar to the one currently offered on taobao. https://m.intl.taobao.com/detail/detail.html?spm=a21m2.8958462/T.list.1&id=522995816039
The eBay seller did not specify a specific age of the jar in his description just said OLD. To me it is a little vague and misleading.
Just want to have some opinion from experts here. Thanks.
please post photos of both vases
tam
This is the Ebay jar.
The Taobao one.
yes the footrims on both are remarkably similar. Should not be that dirty colour. Looks like both are fake. Who is the seller?
tam
Yes it is a fake, no doubt. It confirms what I think since long time, that Chamberlain mixes good and fake items.
That is particualrly bad because it is purposely made; he knows the matter, it is not a mistake in my opinion.
Giovanni
Dear Tam we did post at the same time.
This is definitly a modern fake. Giovanni is right. I have seen a couple of this jar.

Dear John0316,
Was the eBay seller from whom you bought your jar Chamberlain Antiques (eBay seller juice1499)?
Alan
Thanks all. Yes it is Juice1499, Josh.
I also noticed some of his items in the last sale were from previous auctions. Seems like other buyers noticed they were not authentic as well. Need to be careful. Another seller that is occasionally on the newsletter also sells fakes mixed with some real ones.
Dear John0316,
Thank you. It seems from your experience, the experience of some other members of this Forum, and certainly also from my own, that one needs to use exceptional caution when buying anything from this source, someone who sells a mixture of spurious and correct items. Such mixtures bring their own particular perils for unwary buyers.
Here is an extract of one of my recent posts on this seller. Strangely, it didn't get the traction on this Forum that I think it may warrant, but perhaps that is about to change:
'I have bought several things from Mr Chamberlain over the years. Indeed, I was an early buyer from him, before he got the foothold on eBay that he currently has. Let me say that the items I bought have been a very mixed bag. Some have been right, but some wrong. For example, a peach bloom water pot that I bought from him a number of years ago, and which he described as Kangxi mark and period, isn't. I had it checked in Sotheby's. It's a nineteenth century copy. I knew rather less in those days about the subject than I do now, and I won't be making the same mistake twice, but certainly from my experience, Mr Chamberlain's judgment isn't as sound as one might hope.
Peter seems to rate him, and he's probably improved as the years have gone by, but even so and all the same, I'm still left with a misrepresented item that it's now too late to challenge. And it wasn't cheap.'
Regards,
Alan
Hi, Alan: I am in the same boat as your were back then:) Still new and learning. Josh did swiftly issued returned authorization though. Have to give him credit on that. I have also noticed that he puts his stickers on some of his items but not all of them. I am wondering if the ones without his stickers are he ones we need to be cautious about. Also I found it is extremely useful to search on Taobao and see if there are similar items being offered. I have identified several fakes using that method.
Dear John0316,
In a similar boat, but not quite in the same boat - it appears that you were able to return your item with no loss to you; by contrast, I haven't returned the item Joshua Chamberlain sold me, and continue to sustain a loss on it.
I will think more than twice before I ever buy anything from him again.
Maybe if Joshua Chamberlain is reading this Forum, he'd make a generous gesture in my direction and take back the item he misrepresented? He's welcome to have it back in exactly the same condition it was sold to me. And if he does, I will be the first to report his fair dealing.
Let's see what happens.
Best wishes,
Alan
