hello every one, I found this vase on Etsy, Is it a real K'ang-hsi one or a Fake ?
Well, I can’t judge this vase. But if wanted to spend €43.000 on one piece of porcelain an Etsy seller would not be my first choice.

@greeno107 How can you tell the glaze has been trimmed by these pictures? I feel like it is too far away to tell and the glaze just looks like it ends neatly. I would like to have your eye to be able to see it so well from a distance. Any advice for me?
@johnshoe I right click the image that shows the bottom and open in a new tab, then zoom in. You can see the glaze has been ground down. It looks to be better quality than a late 19th c. piece that has been chipped off the kiln, so perhaps early to mid 19th c., or just a good quality late 19th c.
But, think about the asking price... $61,000? It has been my experience that selling privately never achieves the high prices achieved at auction. So, if it's genuine, why not send it to Christie's? Answer.... it's not Kangxi and does not meet the minimum sale threshold for Christie's to take on consignment.
I also notice the rim of the mouth is a bit on the thick side.
@greeno107 Also, do Kangxi vases of this type have that fat of a footrim or should it be thinner? I was thinking it looks a bit chubby.
@greeno107 I wonder why they don’t give it to a smaller auction house. Do they earnestly hope to sell for a fixed price?
Birgit
@detuned It’s the same seller, a jewelry and jade seller from Australia. 10% off and free shipping sounds like a good deal. But I don’t want to think of the import taxes I’d have to pay.
Hi Birgit and others,
It's the same seller that is also on eBay from NSW Australia.
They have a huge inventory with crazy prices. At these prices I would rather buy from Sotheby's or Christie's. At least I would get provenance and the real deal.

@shinigami A small auction house runs the risk of underselling. In fact, many dealers make a very good living specifically buying undervalued pieces from small auction houses, then reselling at Christie's and the such. It is a tight knit group of dealers, so there are cases where they collude to ensure the item sells below value.
The auction world is pretty much a den of snakes. My best experiences with auctions have been with Ebay as surprising as that might sound... they seem to protect buyers. Sellers on the other hand....be careful.
I sold 50 items on eBay in the last month. All of my Chinese buyers and European buyer no issues at all. All my issues were from American buyers. And offer returns to American buyers if they don’t like the item and you don’t offer returns they will just break it. Ebay does bring good buyers willing to pay fare prices but the plate form does not protect the seller. It’s tricky be prepared to lose money at some point. Don’t sell anything you can’t afford to lose.
thanks every one for your comments. I was'nt planning on buying this vase, I dont have the money for it. I want to learn about the foot rims. I recently learned ( from Peter) that the foot rim of a revivel vase off the 19th century was more sloppy and sandy than the real ones off the Kangxy period, who were never chipped off after firing and had a tight line. So I thought that the foot rim off this vase from that period. But the seller and the place where the vase was presented did me immediately wonder. It was nice to see that you found other places where this vase was presented with different prices.
Thanks Ernest
@greeno107 So, are you saying there is a racket of dealers who work together to hold down prices, so one of them can obtain something at undervalue and then upsell it at a big house auction? If so, do they then split the profits of this endeavor? At any rate, any legitimate buyer could come in and outbid them, so it doesn't seem like it could be a very consistent thing.
