Genuine Ming or 20th century copy?

I do not handle much Ming but this looks maybe a 20th century copy.

Hi,

That looks the spitting image of a Plate that I apparently owned back in 2013.

I posted it to a Japanese site from old images in 2013 and the mark was translated as Tianqi.

I never did find the Plate just the images on my computer.

To me mine was a reproduction, the base image seemed too smooth.

Here are some pics lifted from the thread.

I'd be interested where the Plate is that you show.

Regards

Vic

I would agree with Vic that it is Japanese. But I don’t know enough about Japanese ceramics to even guess at a date.

Thanks guys , yeah it looks a near exact copy ,the mark looks very loose like a Japanese piece .

I am guessing it is a later copy of a 17th century Japanese plate

Hi Carl -

Defiantly not Ming, or indeed Chinese.

Chinese Kraak dishs are unknown with genuine reign marks, although a few of the highest quality pieces are know with a ‘Crane or Egret’ mark drawn on the base, which are thought to date to either L16th/E17th century, but there are only around 60 examples know - see attached images. A few Kraak examples have also been excavated from tombs which are inscribed with epithets to the owner, but these are exceptional rare.

I would concur with Vic and NicDan, this is a modern copy of 17th Japanese design, which itself was coping Ming pieces.

Sorry to leap into this thread, but I also have a plate of this replica-Kraak type.  I always thought it was - at best - late 18th c but after reading this, I wondered if maybe mine was a Japanese copy, too, so I started to look around.

However, the only similar one was on Catawiki and described as Kangxi-Yongzheng.  This is mine - I actually have two, they came as part of a bargain job lot of various pieces of mainly damaged 18th b&w, but the other is heavily cracked, this only has a hairline.  It has quite a bluish tinge, a brown rim & footrim and see how the colour has almost bled on the outer edge of the decoration.  There are also what look to be chatter marks.  Do you think that maybe this is a modern replica?

Did you?  I will look it up.  Thanks for letting me know.  I was pretty sure it was 18th century and Chinese, but suddenly started having doubts. ?
