Hello,
I'm new to this group and I needed some help identify this 12th-13th centuary Kashan bowl I recently bought. its very large (10x24,4cm) and is in suspiciously good condition. It originaly broke in a few large fragments an has only some small overpainting over areas of lost glaze. I couldn't find any similar bowls in museum collections. Also I have no idea what the bands of Arabic mean.
I don't have much experience in the field so I'd like to get some opinions from other collectors and experts on if its real and how old it might be.
Hi,
Welcome to the forum. I have only seen a few of these wares and know very little about them. They were also the blue/black type so I am not going to be able to help you, but hopefully someone can chip with something more useful.
I find your bowl's design quite interesting. Given there being an inscription and the significance of the 6 pointed star formed in the centre, might this be a (possible copy of) an incantation bowl?
Just a thought. I have no experience of these.
Julia
Hi Antonis
Great looking bowl. Based on the image below, and though not identical, your bowl is certainly in the ballpark. I have a couple fritware bowls (1 being Kashan) and the foot rims however are much cruder, FWIW.
Thank you, the design is definitely related to the one I have. Mine dose seem to be made by a less skilful craftsman and I'm not entirely sure about this but the yellow glaze used in mine is not lustre. I don't know if that's a red flag or if it was common to immitate lustreware like that back then.
Also, do you think it's safe to assume the the bowl dates from the 12th and not the 13th century?
Antonis,
Notice that the writing on your bowl appears to be raised slip painted. Based on examples in the same book, It seems that the white slip decoration started a little later, in the Mongol period 13-14th centuries. None the less Kashan however. So, that might be a clue to look into further as to dating.
Ok good to know. One final question. Do you think the body is frit or some other type of clay? you can't really see it in the pictures but the body has some darker brow/red colour spots.
I have a limited knowledge of Persian ceramics. I have a couple fritware bowls, a couple relevent books and the Internet...
I can't tell either way from your photos. The back side of your bowl seems somewhat incongruous with the front, possibly due to heavily restoration. Hard to tell what might be glaze, slip or later over-painting without close examination.
Fritware is light and though opaque, has a sort of vitreous but brittle quality to it. Unglazed fritware is usually kind of a buff color. Sometimes, the bisque is covered with a slip ground prior to decoration. Pieces like yours (and one that I have) that have been reconstructed, may have been excavated from burial sites and as such, show signs of discoloration from the mineral content of the soil. That with restoration, a lot of factors to consider.
Thank you for all the help. it was very enlightening and I feel a lot more confident in my piece.
Best wishes,
Antonis
