So last night I had been outbid on this and yet I couldn't fall asleep, knowing I have seen something almost identical at some point, not remembering where. So I threw in another bid and won it, but now I still can't remember what I saw or where.... That part is still driving me nuts, I think it was while researching that Seto flask, or perhaps one of the Wakayama kiln wares... I probably paid too much, but curiosity got the best of me.
Seto is certainly a fairly safe bet
I asked a friend who reads Chinese, and he said the inscription is something about "five children sent worship in September" or something like that. I am curious if anyone has any other ideas.
I am thinking it may be for holding incense or a scholars object/ brush pot. Not too sure.
11cm tall and 7.5cm wide.
Any ideas?

Looks like Japanese writing alright, is it celadon or white? How old do you think? Okay, off to read about older Seto.
P.S. The only character I can find is top left, which is usually part of of a Kutani mark but hopefully someone who can read it will be along, I like it.

I am not sure if it is Seto ware, but the glaze and the paste reminds me of it, from what I can tell in the pictures at least. I do think it has some age, but this is not an area where I really am comfortable in dating pieces. I forgot to update the post a while back, but I posted a Seto flask form bottle, and ran it by peter and while he agreed it is probably Seto and likely 18th century, it could be older or newer, and whith these kilns many of the pieces are one offs. That really makes it hard to date.
I liked it too, and I'll be interested to see the glaze in person. I am really curious if it is a clear glaze on white slip or if it is a white/tan-ish glaze. Definitely not a celadon, more white or cream colored. I swear I have seen something in the same form, more or less, and I think it was while looking at Aichi Prefecture wares, I could have also sworn it was Edo or even Muromachi period. What ever it is it is an attractive little object.

I have come across a number of early pieces that have later inscriptions when given as gifts or commemorating some event, so at least I know the piece is at least late Edo now... I am getting strong 17th/18th century vibes from the coloration and tone of the glaze on this... assuming Seto is correct that it. The burnt feet and tonality of the crackle is reminding me of some ki-seto bottles I have seen before, if I can find it, I think the British museum has a solid example.

@johnshoe John we left Denver at 7am it was 8 degrees F when we got to Cancun it was 82 F lol. We showed up with winter coats.
